The Melrose Volunteer Infantry was an infantry regiment that served in the Union Army during the American Civil War. On November 1st they were mustered out of service at Fort Moultrie. The Melrose Volunteer Infantry lost a total of 23 men killed or mortally wounded during their service.

Melrose is a town in Melrose Vale, Massachusetts. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield, MA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in what would become Melrose were two families who arrived from England in 1638 and soon after founded a smallholding on the east side of present-day Market Street. The first school in what would become Melrose was opened by Rev. Nathaniel Eaton in 1639 and served as an early model for schools across the area. In 1792, the town's first store was built on present-day Main Street and it continued to be its mainstay until 1959 when its closure created a need for a new store and led to the current business district around that location. During much of its history, Melrose enjoyed excellent access to education due to its central location within easy walking distance of both local schools as well as Boston University (now Harvard University). This privilege ended with prohibition during World War II which caused many businesses closed their doors; however, some reopened including one of the town's only banks which continued operations until 1984. Since then, other important businesses have closed or relocated out of reach such as Demolition Studios where rock bands like Led Zeppelin and The Beatles recorded their early albums and still play live today; however they now do so without any stage space available inside their old studio building which has been turned into apartments. Additionally, there has been little development within town limits despite this being an ideal location for it due to zoning variations that forbid most retail development within city limits while allowing agricultural/residential uses close by but not near commercial areas like those found in neighboring towns such as Wellesley or Belchertown. An interesting trend started around 2000 when several small business owners pooled resources together and started renovating 4 properties known collectively as "The Farm". This allowed them to open up shop units with floor plans that reflected their farming practices - everything from homesteaders' cabins up through modern day barns - giving residents more choices about how they wanted their homes furnished than ever before outside of downtown Springfield proper. While this experiment failed commercially because demand far surpassed supply (the units were quickly rented out), it did serve as an excellent marketing tool for these entrepreneurs who continue to run The Farm today despite difficult economic times juxtaposed against high prices for comparable housing throughout much of Greater Springfield proper let aloneMelrose itself Despite these challenges, many people remain optimistic about things Promising signs include an increase in workers coming into town specifically because there are now multiple restaurants nearby (including one right next door!), increased construction activity near downtown (!), new housing being developed all over Town Center Mall (), increasing visitation rates for events held outdoors on Town Common (),and even a growing number elected officials (& mayor!) taking note that things are looking good & want to help make things even better
