Medford, Massachusetts is a town in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 23,691 at the 2010 census. It is the smallest municipality in Massachusetts and the second-smallest municipality in New England. The town's name comes from its location on the Medford River. The first Europeans to visit what is now Medford were Frenchmen who sailed up the river in 1630 and found it already inhabited by Abenaki Indians. They named the area "Mendoza". The English settlers called this area "Medford" after one of their own men, John Eliot, who had settled there in 1642 as part of a Puritan migration from England. In 1792 Nathaniel Hawthorne published his novel "The Great Gatsby". In honor of Hawthorne's visit to Medford that year—the first time an American writer had ever set foot in that town—the town fathers erected a statue of him near Union Station (now part of Harvard University). In 1825 George Washington visited Medford and ordered an apple pie delivered to his home without leaving any notes behind. This event is documented by local historian James Fenton with a plaque located at Arlington National Cemetery commemorating Washington's visit. During World War II many residents evacuated to nearby Quincy for fear of aerial attacks on Boston which occurred every day for weeks during the war; however no damage was done within Medford itself despite large air intakes being placed around buildings due to fears of firebombing raids over Boston which never occurred. Medford is a town in Essex County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 27,829 at the 2010 census. The name is derived from the Medford River and its tributaries. It has been home to a variety of cultures and people over the years, including Quakers, Congregationalists, Episcopalians (Anglicans), Baptists, Methodists, Jews (Spanish and Ashkenazi), and Hindus. The first European settlement in Medford was by Captain John Winthrop who landed on the present-day site of Medford on December 17th 1630 with his small party of men after reaching Cape Cod three days earlier. He named the site Pocasset Harbor after his other ship which had carried him there from England. In 1635 Samuel Adams built a small shelter near what is now South High Street for use as a trading post during the winter months when he traveled along the New England coast selling goods he had acquired while exploring new lands in North America. That same year saw another early European settler arrive in Medford when Nathanael Greene bought land off of Caleb Strong at what is now South High Street. The town charter was granted on February 15th 1646 by governor Stephen Bernard to Nathaniel Eaton and others who had petitioned for it. The original proprietors were Samuel Adams, Nathanael Greene, Caleb Strong and John Winthrop Sr.. The first store opened in 1647 by George Gamaliel Smith using money gathered from local fishermen during their annual season fishing off Cape Cod.. In 1648 Jonathan Gault built a house on what is now North Church Street; this house still stands today as one of Medford's most important buildings. During King Philip's War (1675-1676) many English military units based in Norwalk sailed upriver to Battle Point where they skirmished with Native American forces led by Massasoit Indian Chief Wampanoag Tomokatomi before eventually withdrawing back upstream under cover of darkness. As part of efforts to consolidate Indian territory following these hostilities several hundred Dutch settlers arrived in Medford between November 1675 and January 1676 but no action occurred due to fear that further warfare would ignite among competing tribal groups already embroiled in open conflict with each other throughout New England region In retaliation for English raids into Wampanoag country previous Indian Chiefs requested French assistance which resulted in France sending an expeditionary force under General Le Page command through Boston harbor on April 12th 1679 known as Pontiac’s Rebellion which ultimately failed because French troops did not make contact with hostile tribesmenities operating within their own borders . Aftermath of this war resulting in many dead both sides caused large amounts of property damage which continues to be repaired/maintained to this day .Following King Philip's War many Puritans relocated from Englands mainland colonies seeking religious freedom within newly discovered Plymouth Colony while also establishing settlements throughout New England . In March 1700 Peterborough “Plymouth Plantation” came into being when traders travelling down river entrained at Chesterfield Ferry landing founded an agricultural colony hauling produce upriver about 7 miles wide and 10 miles long clearing land for farming purposes .
