Medford, Massachusetts is a town in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 43,651 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Boston metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in what is now Medford was Nicholas Conger in 1775. He and his brother-in-law John Goode founded a small trading post on the Mystic River near what is now Harvard University. In 1802, Medford became an incorporated town under the name of Northampton; it reverted to its original name after incorporation as Medford. The town's growth was due in part to its location along Via Appia (now Route 128) which linked Boston with New York City and other larger towns and cities across the Northeast. During World War II, Medford served as one of four main airfields used by the United StatesAAF for bombing operations over Japan; others were Chelmsford Airport in Essex County and Manchester Municipal Airport in Manchester, New Hampshire. After the war ended, many businesses closed down because of low demand for wartime products from Japan following the end of hostilities.
