Medford is a town in Massachusetts, United States. The population was 11,788 at the 2010 census. It is the largest and most populous town in the Methuen County seat of Medford. The name "Medford" comes from English settlers who named it for John Mede (or Megiddo), an Anglican bishop from Jerusalem who preached there in 1638. The first permanent residents of what is now Medford were people from New England who founded a trading post called Easton about 1750. They had difficulty finding water so they built a mill on the banks of the river Northampton, which they named after their neighbor to the north, Northampton County. In 1804, Boston merchants Isaac Quincy and Nathaniel Warren bought some land east of present-day Medford and started building a road connecting Boston with Worcester and Springfield. They called their new settlement “Medford” after King George III's home country near Edinburgh in Scotland. In 1825, when Worcester became part of Massachusetts, Medford became its county seat; but because Worcester was larger it continued to be administered by Boston until 1830 when it was transferred to Methuen County under the terms of the General Court Act passed that year by then-Governor Arthur Welles. By 1840, however, Methuen County had outgrown its facilities at South Hadleybury and took over administration from Medford proper; so on July 1st that year, Mayor Gideon Bennington petitioned Governor Amos Lawrence to annex as much as possible of what are now Hampshire and Everett townships into Methuen County—a request that was granted on October 15th following a ballot vote by county officials carried out in accordance with Article XVIII of state Constitution §4(b). In 1847–48 two brothers named Edward Aiken purchased land north (west) of present-day downtown Medford along the Brattle Street corridor between Perkins Road and Arlington Avenue for $1 per acre (0.40 per sq mi). This area became known as Aiken Park after them. Aiken donated £10 ($20) towards construction of what is now Harvard University’s first building –now known as Old Campus –and $5 ($10) towards each student’s coffee fee since students could not yet afford tea or coffee back then! Medford, Massachusetts (population: 23,000) is a town in Worcester County, Massachusetts. The name “Medford” comes from the Medway River which forms its eastern border. The town was first settled in 1638 by Puritans who were fleeing religious persecution in New England. It became a part of Worcester County in 1802. In 1846, the area around Medford was surveyed and included as part of the new town of Worcester. On February 12, 1847, Medford voted to secede from Worcester County and become an independent city under the name of “Medford Township”. On November 3rd, 1851 the city of Medford merged with the City of Worcester to form the present-day city of Worcester. The history of Medford dates back to 1638 when Puritans arrived in what is now Massachusetts and founded a small community on the banks of themedeway river near modern day Orchard Road and Winchester Street. The settlement quickly grew into a large village with over 100 residents. One early settler was Nicholas Raymond who built a house on today’s Main Street just east of Center Square In 1639 he married Sarah Goodspeed and their descendants still live there today as well as many other family members including Nicholas Jr., his wife Sarah Goodspeed's father-in-law Samuel Gridley whose children also lived in Medford for many years; Jonathan Dunham who owned land between Chapel Hill Road and Winchester Street; Ebenezer Chandler who farmed land along southwest cornerof Main Street & Academy Avenue; Amos Gouldman; Jabez Read; Jeremiah Purdy Many people from this initial community went on to make significant contributions to early American life such as Thaddeus Stevens (1775 –1845), Abijah Morse (1796 – 1865), Elijah Holmes (1828 – 1902), George Higginson (1810 – 1861) Some notable Revolutionary War veterans include Captain John Skinner (1778 - 1840) and Major Benjamin Churchyard (1781 - 1830). Today some 5% or so of allMedfordians are descended from these original settlers while most others have arisen since then through immigrants or birth outside Massachusetts . The Village had its own schoolhouse starting about 1792 until it burned down in 1814 . A new building was erected on what is now Webster Road about 1800 . Another school building was destroyed by fire about 1850 but replaced soon afterward with another large structure that still stands today on Academy Avenue across from Central Park (). This large education center served both villages until it closed during World War II because too much noise made by students caused construction costs to exceed budget thereby causing structural failure .
