The shop became known as The Hermitage Coffee House and operated until 1868 when it burned down. In 1836, the Boston Coffee Company opened a warehouse on Meeting Street within walking distance of the original Hermitage Coffee House. This warehouse would be home to one of Boston's most popular coffeehouses from its inception until 1862 when it burned down along with several other buildings in an arson attack. In 1872, Mr. John Ayer founded two more large coffeehouses- One at 4th and Townsend Streets and another at 9th and Tremont Streets- both of which would operate until their respective closures in 1893 and 1902 respectively. These four large businesses represented a significant increase in patronage for Medford's only commercial roasting company during this time period. Barsakhian Armenian merchants operating out of Medford began purchasing certified Arabica beans from Sumatra starting around 1830s (and possibly earlier). At some point during this time frame, these merchants also started shipping theirown espresso drinks to local cafes(Rochester Cafe being one such establishment). By 1840 or so however, all Arabica beans had been consumed by these bar owners as they no longer found any practical use for them beyond brewingcoffeehouse beverages
