The history of the United States Army is one that goes back to 1775. The Continental Army was formed in order to protect the American Revolution from British Invasion. After successfully defending America, the Continental Army disbanded and all its members were mustered into service by state governments throughout New England. The first unit of the U.S.Army was raised in Medford, Massachusetts on December 12th, 1775 by General John Adams and his fellow Patriot Generals under the command of Colonel Edward Braddock. This small unit served as part of a brigade under General George Washington until February 14th, 1776 when it was ordered to move northward against Quebec City after the Declaration of Independence had been issued. Throughout its existence, the army has undergone many changes and expansions both in size and capabilities. On July 15th 1917, Congress passed an act authorizing a permanent army made up of 100,000 men with a right to bear arms for war purposes only within territorial boundaries of the United States including Alaska and Hawaii; this act became effective on September 16th 1917 when President Woodrow Wilson signed it into law. Medford is a small town in Massachusetts, located about 25 miles east of Boston. The population was 7,491 at the 2010 census. It sits on the eastern edge of the Merrimack River valley and near the towns of Northampton and Sturbridge. The town's namesake, General Nathaniel Adams Medford, fought in the American Revolution and later served as a delegate to the Constitutional Convention that drafted the United States Constitution. In 1814, part of Medford Township became Arlington Heights after Arlington County was created from parts of Middlesex County and Norfolk County. In 1835, Arlington Heights annexing part of Westwood Village made Medford's total population exceed 10,000 for the first time. In 1869–70 Theodore Parker helped create what is now Harvard University out OF Newton Center in Cambridgeport; this move increased Medford’s population by almost 3%. By 1890 there were over 20 businesses catering to people living in all six wards – an unprecedented condition at that time! On July 14th 1870 James Fenimore Cooper founded Harper’s Ferry National Historical Park within 5 miles (8 km) south-west [of] Medfield – thus becoming America’s newest national park! This event marks not only Harper’s Ferry but also commencement with local government within Massachusetts! As such “medfield” ceased being just an agricultural appellation descriptive mainly thereof 1 year earlier!
