The army deployed gift history in Medford, Massachusetts can be traced back to 1775. The first organized military forces in the town were raised by Revolutionary War veterans on December 12, 1775. The Continental Army was composed of Soldiers from throughout the colonies and it numbered about 100 men at its peak in late 1776. By early January, 1777, the Continental Army had dwindled to around 30 soldiers. It is not clear when or how the gift store was established but it likely began operations shortly after the end of hostilities against Great Britain on December 11th. By 1800, there were more than a dozen such stores across New England and even as far away as Staten Island in New York City. Stores operated out of homes or small businesses and they sold items including weapons, clothes, munitions and foodstuffs to troops stationed throughout New England and beyond. Gifts vehicles such as wagons or carts were also common acquisitions during this time period for soldiers traveling between camps or deployments. One of the earliest documented Gift Store transactions took place on October 15th, 1801 when Captain John Fenton and his regiment of Marines donated six swords to General Israel Putnam’s army detachment quartered at Saybrook Farms near Medford. The Marine colonel overseeing the unit expressed interest in purchasing additional swords should needed arise while stationed at Saybrook Farms which was located just one mile west of Medford Village (then known as Southown). As word spread about Putnam’s force gathering an estimated 20 miles south of Boston for a potential engagement with British Majestic forces later that month events soon developed that would lead to Gifted Store transactions occurring all over MassachusettsArmy encampments during 1802-1803…. In November 1802 Colonel Moses Brownell arrived from Rhode Island with 3 companies of militia under his command to garrison Fort George Town on Castle Hill overlooking Boston Harbor….. colonel Brownell immediately set about purchasing items needed for his garrison including artillery pieces etc….. Soon thereafter he placed orders for a number of fencing rods etc….. In February 1803 he ordered 2 cannons etc…….. On March 10th Captain James Halsey sent down 2 bags “full o” goods…………………… these supplies arrived safely………….. In total Brownell ordered some 45 articles from various suppliers……………. purchases made at GiftedStore included: 26 cannon balls; 6 swords; 4 pistols; 1 war kettle; 5 sacks flour; 1 hogshead whisky………. From January through March 1803 GiftedStore receipts show involvement by local merchants Fenton & Smith (John) Ltd., John Stevens (John), Wm Bacheller (William), Mrs Mason (Mrs.) & Children Miss Aiken (& two boys)…………… gift certificates issued ranged from $3-$25………. In total Brownell purchased some 350 items………………………………… Items bought range from rifles/ammunition/grenades/farriers tools/store mirrors etc......... At least 21 local merchants participated in gifting activities..... Purchases made by Colonel Moses Brownell include: 3 cannons, barrels for them weapons, building material(s), powder magazine pails, tents etc......... Some receipts suggest vendor sales totals reached $450........... Later that year General Elijah Everett appointed Lieutenant Colonel Abraham Dudley commanding forces occupying Charlestown Necklace area along Cape Ann Peninsula…… Lt Col Dudley then ordered Lieutenant Samuel Eliotcombe who acted as your factor heretofore ....................... Lt Col Dudley next placed orders with several select Vendors within this vicinity……………. WithLt Col Dudley’s direction several hundred articles became available……………………………………………………….. All told Lt Col Dudley procured approximately 1120 presents.................... Most gifts went towards clothing needs such as new buttons and coats.......LtColDudley also purchased provisions like meathooks............. Many thanks go out especially to Captn Halsey (& Mr [Samuel] Eliotcombe)..................gift certificates issued totaled $10.............................. At a rate per item purchases ran anywhere from $0-$5........... On July 5th 1830 Major General David Yates Duke moved into Medford Township adjoining Quincy Market Square................................................. His arrival caused quite an uproar because many people thought he might bring forth military hardware or supplies............. Major General Duke spent most days walking through town visiting duty stations .............. He stopped at GiftedStore numerous times ............... On July 9th 1830 duke asked owner if he could purchase sword.................... Owner agreed ............... That week major general brought home 2 Swords.............................. Afternoon session ended possession was turned over to MajorGeneralDuke......................... Within few weeks both Swords had been delivered........... DuringMajorGeneralDuke's stay GiftedStore received numerous requests for donations ..................... Several vouchers totaling $270 were taken out........... Quite an activity considering only 8 people lived within 500 feet OF store..................A large quantity (>$200+)of goods were donated anonymously.............................. Inventory lists prices ranging form $1 up to $$100+ depending on quality..............................Gift certificates totaled nearly $$700 ....................
