The first national guard unit in Marlborough was organized on December 12, 1775. The unit was made up of militiamen from the town of Marlborough and its surrounding villages. The unit served as a militia force until it was disbanded on October 1, 1776. On November 10, 1846, the Massachusetts National Guard Infantry Battalion was reorganized into a regiment. On May 1, 1847, the regiment became the 2nd Regiment of Massachusetts National Guards. The regiment's name changed to 4th Regiment of Massachusetts National Guards on May 14, 1898. On January 3, 1903, the 4th Regiment of Massachusetts National Guards were reorganized into an infantry battalion and redesignated as the 9th Regiment of Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry (National Guard). In 1921, this battalion became part of III Corps and then V Corps during World War II before being redesignated again as the 9th Regiment of Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry (National Guard) on September 25, 1945. Since 1946, all units within IX Corps have been known as "9th MA NC" while XII Corps has had "10th MA NJ" since 2002. currently there is no XIII Corps entity in which all members are called 9MDNC or even just "9MA".
In the United States, the national guard is a reserve force of the military that is activated by both the president and the United States Congress. The purpose of the national guard is to provide protection for American citizens and property, as well as to respond to any emergency or natural disaster. The National Guard was first organized in 1792 when George Washington ordered all able-bodied men between 18 and 25 years old to report to his headquarters at Fort McHenry in Baltimore. At its peak in 1940, there were over 26 million soldiers and civilians members of the national guard in America. Today, there are an estimated 51 different militia organizations across America that can be called up by either state or local authorities for duty within their respective jurisdictions. There are five main branches of service within the national guard: infantry, artillery, armor, air defense (AQ), and cavalry. Infantry units may be mobilized into brigade or battalion size formations; artillery units may fielded single rounds or machine guns only; armor units may have no more than two vehicles per company; while cavalry units are limited to horseback riding only. 1) Inactive Duty Member Status - These individuals remain on active duty but do not receive pay or benefits from it 2) Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) cadets - These cadets are enrolled in college full time but serve out their obligated time as part of a National Guard unit 3) Active Duty Member Status - Individuals who have completed three months service must rejoin their unit before they can return home 4) Civilian Reserve Officers Corps (CROCs)--These officers are not commissioned officers but instead work for local governments as police officers, firefighters/rescue workers,etc... There are currently 1 million CROCs working in our country
National Guard gift history in Marlborough, Massachusetts goes back to the Revolutionary War. The town of Marlborough was founded by Puritans in 1768, and soon became a center for Patriot activity. In the Revolution, the town played a pivotal role in supporting the cause. In particular, local patriots helped lead the fight against British forces at Bunker Hill. After the war ended, Marlborough's citizens turned their attention to rebuilding their community. One of the first tasks they took on was creating a local militia force to support their efforts. This effort led to the formation of the First National Guard Battalion in 1775. The battalion would continue to serve in various capacities throughout the 1800s and into today's National Guard service.
Marlborough, Massachusetts is a town located in Hampshire County, Massachusetts. The population was 5,408 at the 2010 census. Marlborough is part of the Boston metropolitan area. The town was first settled by the Puritans in 1630. It became a separate town on April 17, 1824, when it amalgamated with other towns in Hampshire County to form the present-day city of Boston. In 1916, Marlborough was one of thirteen communities in Boston that were transferred from Middlesex County to Hampshire County as a result of the statewide referendum known as "Fenway Park". The referendum resulted in Middlesex and Suffolk counties being divided into two districts; these districts would be represented by separate members on the English county board of selectmen until 1973 when they were combined into one district under the new constitution. Marlborough has a rich history dating back to its earliest days as an agricultural community. In 1630, Sir Ferdinando Gorges purchased 2/3 of land called "the Manor" which included what is now Marlborough village and surrounding areas east of Route 128 and west of Interstate 95. The manor house still stands today and can be seen from many miles away! Gorges built his home there and spent his summers entertaining friends and family. He also cultivated crops such as wheat and barley inside his manor while living outside for months at a time during winter times for additional income. In 1639, John Hathorne granted another parcel of land to Gorges which extended from present day Market Street northward to South Street (now Clinton Street). This parcel also included much of what is now Marlborough Village including homes east off I-95 past Fenway Park onto Quincy Road between Northampton Avenue and Harvard Avenue (now Eliot Street). Today this area is known as Back Bay Westchester! A plaque commemorating this event can be found at our local library’s archives office along with several other items related thereto including plans for Hathorne’s original estate! A few years later in 1642 Nathaniel Eaton purchased 3/8ths or “the League” near where he currently resides on High Streets between Westminster Road (now Queen Anne Avenue)and Hyde Park Corner near Central Square - just southwest corner Of Boylston Place today (& former home & meeting place for revolutionaries like Samuel Adams!) Eaton developed some extensive farming practices hereabouts which are still evident today throughout most if not all parts of Marlborough Village proper - so prolific even those who don't live here anymore may know about it simply by looking out their window! And yes indeed we have lots more coming up soon too...Oops! Anyway - back to General George Washington's life & death...On July 4th – or rather November 7th [1784], after spending weeks exploring New England foraging for food etc., he arrived at Kemaqua Pond (then spelled Kemahqua), about 25 miles northeast(!)of Worcester MA mutationarily setting up camp within sight or actual reach (~4 miles?)of Shrewsbury Town Limits then quartered himself amongst Parson Whitney's Dutch families both before & after main battle fought 6 days thence & lost very decisively.....Aftermath saw large scale migration across pond resulting in displacement (& destruction)of entire Dutch fambly on far side…..Lastly note: due largely TO BritishArmy raid leading up to Battle field.... wee did manage tho make some tartan cloth however only metres wide not yards wide.......Nathaniel Eaton had been able to build fortified farmstead w/ cannonball proof doorstop against raiding Tories but lost primaryBattle Maintaining an unbroken cultural link with its colonial ancestors has been important to Marlborough since its inception as a settlement; Thaddeus Stevens attended school here until age 10 before moving on to Yale University where he graduated magna cum laude in 1827 according To historian Dr.(name redacted), “Marlboroians” are particularly proud that their ancestor Rev Nathaniel Eaton brought Christianityto this region following Colonel John oppositionTo Indian Captivity Rituals practiced bylocal Mohawk nation members At Plymouth Rock— beginningin 1756 following forced Removalfrom trading post via Massacre ledbyMassachusetts Governor Thomas Hutchinson—MarLBoroughians choseEaton instead dueTo deep spiritual connection& strong senseOf Personal Responsibility resultant From Assimilation experienceIn short: Thaddeus Stevens could tracehis lineage back more than 350 years ✅
The National Guard has a long and varied history, dating back to the Revolutionary War. In 1792, the first national guard regiment was organized in New York City under the command of Colonel George Washington. The regiment served for two years, before disbanding. In 1812, the Second Rhode Island Regiment was organized as part of the American Revolution. The regiment served until 1814 when it disbanded due to its lack of combat experience. In 1861, President Abraham Lincoln called for 1 million men to be drafted into the Union Army as a reaction to secession by southern states. As a result of this call, many soldiers were drafted into the National Guard and these troops formed the nucleus of what would become known as "the Civil War army." The National Guard remained an important part of US society throughout much of the war. After hostilities ended in 1865, many units were disbanded or converted into other military services. However, several thousand remaining units were re-organized and continued to serve until 1972 when they were finally abolished entirely by law.
On November 15, 1926, the United States Congress passed an act authorizing the National Guard to be used for patriotic purposes. On December 3, 1926, President Calvin Coolidgesigned the act. The first units of the National Guard were organized on December 9th.
