Marlborough, founded in 1764 by John Marlborough, is a historic town in Hampshire County, Massachusetts. The population was 382 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was first settled on the west side of the River March and then on land east of it. Its earliest settlers were from England, and their descendants still live there. In 1802, the town voted to become a city. A fire destroyed most of Marlborough in 1803, but it was restored within a few years. Marlborough has two public schools and one private school. There are also several churches and businesses in Marlborough including a grocery store (now closed), post office (closed 1890), doctor's office (closed 1902), millinery shop (closed 1912), hardware store (closed 1916), barber shop (closed 1933) and three restaurants: A&W Root Beer Company; The Blue Mart; and The Dutchman restaurant. Marlborough, Massachusetts is a town in Hampshire County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 12,898 at the 2010 census. The name of the town is derived from the Marlborough family of English origin who purchased land here in 17th century. The town began as a small village and evolved into an incorporated municipality over time. Marlborough was first settled by Wampanoag Indians in 1636 during the Pequot War and remained part of their territory until 1655 when they ceded it to the English crown under the Treaty of Newton-on-the-Hudson. In 17th century, John Winthrop founded what would eventually become Marlborough after making his fortune as one of England's leading Puritans. Winthrop named his new settlement for himself, following his brother's death in 1630 while on an exploratory voyage to North America. Winthrop arrived with 5 other men in early September 1635 on HMS Mayflower and set out eastward for what would be his first journey westward beyond what is now Massachusettes Bay. After reaching Cape Cod on October 6, they sailed upriver to Plymouth Colony where they landed on November 2 and started their long journey back home across New England which took them more than two months total! The group reached Plymouth on December 13th but only managed to stay for about three days before setting off again towards Boston under heavy rains that continued throughout their trip! They finally arrived atBoston on December 17th after spending 18 weeks traversing almost 1,000 miles! Although not yet established as a permanent colony, Plymouth had become a thriving city by this point thanks in part to its strategic location within reach of both Europe and India! It wasn't until January 8th 1636 that English forces recaptured Wampanoag territories from Dutch colonists at Nauset Point near present day Middleboro – thus marking the beginning of English colonial presence in southern MA!. From here forward Marlborough became one of several towns situated along Route 3 (now Route 128) within Massachusetts proper; others being Weymouth (founded by Lieutenant Governor Thomas Dudley), Marblehead (founded by Captain John Smith), Quincy (founded by Colonel John Glover), Southbridge (founded by Reverend Samuel Eliot Morison), Dorchester (founded by Revs Jabez Ward and Jonathan Edwards). On July 1st 1639 Edward Winslow built Fort William Henry at modern day Wellesley MA due to fears Spanish traders were planningto enter through Harvard Harbor! Although initially manned primarily with militiamen – including Captain Nathaniel Parker’s “Palladians” –Marblehead grew quickly into an all-volunteer community led primarily by Congregational ministers such as Dr. Cotton Mather who served from1640 until his death in 1692 . By 1700 there were upwards OFTY Congregationalist ministers living in Marlborough!!!
Marlborough is a town in Plymouth County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 9,531 at the 2010 census. It is the smallest town in Plymouth County and the second-smallest town in Massachusetts after Holyoke. The area that would become Marlborough was first settled by the Pequot people in 1636. In 1723, Captain John Smith ofestablishing himself as an English trader on the Monmouth River discovered and named a stream after his patron saint, St. John Baptist (John). Drury's Plains Rd., now part of downtown Marlborough, was named for Captain Smith's trading post. In 1786, Colonel Jonathan Harris of Charlestown purchased five miles (8 km) of land from the Pequot people and built a house thereon which served as the first courthouse in what would become Plymouth County. One year later, on November 15th of that year two men who had been fishing near where present-day State Route 93 meets Interstate 95 were taken prisoner by Indians under General Arthur Stroud's command at West Point on Cape Cod Bayou about three miles east of present day Norwich. One man - John Davenport - was beheaded with a sword thrust through his heart while he slept; his body still remains within view along SR 93 to this day - an eerie reminder of what could have happened if those settlers had not retreated inland when they heard screams coming from upriver on October 22nd! A meeting was called to discuss next steps and it was decided that Captain David Dudley should go ashore with some men to try and rescue these captives while Governor Thomas Hutchinson stayed offshore to monitor events ashore. Dudley landed several boats full of men but upon reaching shore he found that all but one boat had been destroyed by fire before he could get back into it to return it to its captain; instead he made his way back upstream where reinforcements were waiting for him! This event became known as "Dudley's Disaster". Aftermath: Many natives were killed or captured including two white women whom Captain David Dudley took captive wife too . map
