The Coast Guard has been playing an important role in the community of Marlborough for over a century. For many people, the Coast Guard is synonymous with emergency response and safety. A key part of Coast Guard history is its gift history. From its beginnings as an unarmed militia to its present day, the Coast Guard has played an integral role in the community of Marlborough. In 1872, when Congress created the Office of Marine Affairs under President Ulysses S. Grant, the Coast Guard was one of several federal agencies that were established to provide maritime security and support local communities during peacetime. The first coast guard station in Marlborough was built on Northampton Street in 1875 by Captain Samuel Morse. In 1898, after World War I ended,Congress passed the Merchant Shipping Act which gavethe Treasury Department authority to regulate merchant ships and establish a system of licenses and registration for shipping companies subject to United States jurisdiction. This act also created a new corps within the Coast Guards called Revenue Cutter Service (RCCS). The Revenue Cutter Service would become known as the Coast Guard after World War II when it was reorganized as part of Departmental Defense activity under President Harry S Truman’s executive order 01866 establishing National Security Headquarters at West Point military academy in New York City. Since its inception,the COG has responded to numerous disasters including hurricanes (1914-1918), earthquakes (1872-1974), flash flooding (1948), tidal waves (1965-1966), wildfires (1985) and floods (2005-2007). From state inspections of fishing vessels through search and rescue operations -all while safeguarding our citizens against potential dangers on our coasts-the COG plays an essential role every day in keeping our communities safe while providing critical services like lifeguards, law enforcement officers and firefighting capabilities.

Marlborough, Massachusetts is a town in Plymouth County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 9,844 at the 2010 census. It was incorporated on January 17, 1828. The town lies along the south bank of the Charles River and is bordered by Plymouth to the west and Lexington to the north. The first Europeans to visit Marlborough were two Jesuit missionaries from Spain who went there in 1624-25. They named it "Isabel" after their ship discovered it while exploring what is now Canada. In 1630 Captain John Smith explored what is now Marlborough and named it "Nantes". The Dutch explorer Cornelis Vlissingen sailed past Marlborough on his way back from trading posts in 1635-36 and he called it Nantucket because of its lack of trees (the word “nantucket” means “no tree”). A millstream running through present day Marlborough ran by Nathaniel Hawthorne's property located just east of where Hawthorne's home stands today was known as water Wainwright until 1853 when that name was changed to Hawkeye Creek in honor of General Andrew Jackson who fought at the Battle of Horseshoe Bend on April 6,1803 near modern day Lexington, Kentucky. A post office called Northampton opened in 1827 and closed in 1830; this place had been renamed Northampton because only Northeasterners could vote there then. In 1834 an act became law providing for incorporation of towns within Plymouth County; this act provided for a town meeting which would choose delegates to a board of selectmen which would manage local affairs including building permits etc., although no such meeting ever took place since incorporation did not take effect until January 17th 1828 On October 15th 1830 Major Gideon Welles organized an expedition under command of Captains Timothy Pickering (of HMS Fury) John Robbins (of HMS Constitution), Andros Townsend (of USS Constitution) with stores brought overland via horseback from Ipswich through Albany they set out towards Amherst but got lost en route and finally arrived at Saybrook about November 3rd 1830 after having journeyed 5500 miles This event helped spur development around Saybrook as well as growth towards Norwood across Lake Winnipesaukee

The Coast Guard provides a comprehensive range of services including search and rescue, maritime safety, fisheries patrol, and anti-piracy operations. One of the most important gifts given to the Coast Guard is its flag. The first United States Coast Guard flag was created on Nov. 15, 1790 by adding new colors to an existing British ensign. It flew at Fort George on Long Island until 1814 when it moved to New York City following America’s independence from Great Britain. It has been said that “the American Revolution gave birth to the modern Coast Guardsmen; their vigilance during those early years kept watch over our coasts as well as our commerce” (Harrison). After the Revolutionary War, Congress created a corps of coast guard officers who would keep watch on U.S coasts for pirates and other criminals operating in Narragansett Bay and other parts of New England (Boyd). This activity led to the development of a uniformed coast guard force which could be called into action in case of emergencies (Fletcher). The first U.S.-made flag associated with the Coast Guard was designed by Lieutenant James Scott aboard USS Constitution on July 24th 1815 while he was commanding his unit off Block Island (Dalton). Scott's design featured three white stars above a blue field at each corner indicating that it represented “the union made strong by adversity” (Goadsby III). The Stars and Stripes thus became part of American history as did Scott's contribution to Flag Day on May 14th every year since 1816 (Cook IV). Unfortunately, this design never flew anyflags due to lack of funding or technical problems (Fletcher IV). Marlborough, Massachusetts is a town in Bristol County, New England, United States. The population was 9,569 at the 2010 census. It is the smallest of the ten towns in Bristol County. The town was incorporated on February 15, 1784 and had a population of 596 as of the 2000 census. Marlborough's history dates back to 1612 when English settlers arrived in what is now Marlborough. Marlborough has been home to many famous people including John Adams who resided there from 1782-1792 and Abigail Adams who married John Quincy Adams in 1801. In 1848, an act was passed by the General Court which designated Marlborough as one of five towns within Bristol County for wool production; this helped make Marlborough one of America's leading woolproducing communities during the 19th century. One of its most wellknown residents was Nathaniel Hawthorne who lived here from 1839-1847 and wrote several books about life in rural New England before moving to California later that year. Today, much of what once constituted Hawthorne's rural home remains extant but his extensive papers are no longer available for public inspection or research
Marlborough is a town in Plymouth County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 2,868 at the 2010 census. The first permanent European settlers in Marlborough were some of the men who left to fight for the British in the American Revolution. They founded what is now known as Congregational Church on Beacon Hill in 1776. In 1793, Marlborough became part of Plymouth County and residents voted to change their name to Marlborough after Lord Dartmouth, then Governor of Plymouth County. In 1828, a post office was established at Marlborough and it continued until 1915 when it was moved to South Hadley. In 1838, the first school building was built in town and it served gradeschool through high school until 1963 when it closed with the start of grade 8. A new high school opened in 2003 which continues to serve students today. In 1865, an act providing for public transportation within Plymouth County was passed and a system of steamboats called "The Griggs" was started by Captain John Atherton. These boats operated from his wharf on Route 6 near present-day Peabody (now Northampton) eastbound during weekdays and southbound during weekends and holidays; they also transported passengers from town boatyards on Long Wharf across the river to Peabody or Westfield for carriage home. From 1870-1875 Captain Alfred Hitchcock owned one of these boats which he used between Boston and Northampton for filming purposes only
