Since the Revolutionary War, the Massachusetts Militia has been a vital part of the state's defense. The 1st Regiment, Suffolk County Infantry (now 2nd Battalion, Headquarters and Service Company) was organized in 1775 and served until 1898. Malden, Massachusetts is a town in Essex County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 17,827 at the 2010 census. Malden is located on the border of Essex and Middlesex Counties and is bordered to the east by Amesbury, to the south by Brighton Beach, to the west by Natick and Worcester counties and to the north by Framingham. The first English settlement in what would become Malden was founded in 1636 by Reverend John Eliot. The town's name comes from a small stream called "Maldon" which ran through it. The first meeting of the General Court of Massachusetts was held at Eliot's house on July 25th, 1638. In 1642-1643 an act was passed fixing a rate for board and lodging in this town for absentees from other towns within six months; but it has been doubted whether this law ever had any effect. In 1802 Malden voted against incorporation as part of Springfield Township because they thought that doing so would integrated their community with Springfield Township’s more established residents too closely. However, when Springfield Township merged into Quincy Township in 1853 Malden voted to be annexed into Quincy Township again because they felt they were not being offered enough opportunities within Quincy Township itself. Today Malden remains an agricultural community with much focus on its dairy products production such as cheese and creamery products as well as hay and straw fed animals for meat production purposes. It also contains several retail businesses catering primarily to health food stores or niche markets specific to veganism or gluten intolerance among others. Production of eggs stopped completely around 2002 however there are still some laying hens kept alive within facilities managed by local farmers who process their eggs using natural methods including careful monitoring of temperature & humidity levels and providing fresh air access during egg lay). Malden, Massachusetts is a town in Essex County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 2,869 at the 2010 census. Malden is part of the Boston–Worcester–New Bedford Combined Statistical Area. The towns of Malden and Wellesley lie to the north and east respectively. The first European settlement in what is now Malden was made by Captain John Smith on July 26, 1623 as part of his unsuccessful attempt to find a route from Plymouth to New England. He named the place "Malden" after his home village of Maldon in England. A post office called "Malden" was established in 1836, and remained in operation until 1923. The first store in Malden was built on Main Street in 1836 by Samuel Morse and Alfred Vail. It became known as Morse's grocery store because it served as the center for local trade during that time period. In 1881, an addition was added to the store which housed a machine shop and other business buildings used by farmers during that time period. In 1903, two additions were also made to the store which included a children's play area and an adult play area which are still extant today. In 1955, four new stores were added to the complex including one containing a toy department and three drug stores along with five small businesses space including a bakery, tailor shop, photographer's studio and restaurant all located on Second Floor East side of Store fronts across from Grocery Store). On November 17th 1957 when new town hall building opened (which replaced old schoolhouse), it became Municipal Building #2 for Mallden which would remain unchanged until January 1st 1971 when plans were submitted for remodeling/renovation adding both fireplaces/ovens along with new windowsills & siding throughout resulting in current building design & color scheme slated as Town Hall 3 currently under construction at 501 Elm Street
Malden was first settled in 1636 by the English and grows up around a busy wharf on the Mystic River. The town gradually grew around its harbor and commercial district, which still exists today. Malden was chartered as a village in 1792, and soon became an important center for trade and industry. It changed hands several times before becoming part of Massachusetts in 1825. The town experienced heavy industrialization during the late 19th century, but has since declined in importance.
