In 1828, a millrace was constructed through Lynn Necklace (now known as Route 9) so that corn could be ground into flour for baking bread in New England. This millrace has been cited as an early example of a watercraft landing on Long Island Sound and being used commercially as an access point for trade withagricultural products from further up inland. Lynn's earliest businesses were: Wigglesworth & Sons Bootmakers (founded 1868), JAMES FERGUSON & SONS Grocery Store (opened 1865), Mrs EARNHARDT's Tea House (1875), Mr WILLIAM KESLER'S Lumberyard (1887). A post office called Lynn was established in 1837; it changed its name to Lynn after 1850. A railroad station called Lynn was built near where present day Route 9 intersects Interstate 95 in 1896; this station closed along with other tracks in 1966 due to low ridership levels. When Interstate 95 was completed through eastern Massachusetts in 1990, one lane of traffic per direction running concurrent with I-95 passing through town center closed off Main Street between Market Street and Meetinghouse Road due to overloading on both lanes during peak hours only – this caused havoc for locals who had to use side streets which became very congested during these times! However today there are still some remnants of this closure including a large concrete cutout located southbound on Meetinghouse Road just past Exit 261B which once served as an entrance/exit from I-95’s commercial strip mall!
