Lynn, Massachusetts is a town in Essex County, Massachusetts. The population was 5,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Boston metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in Lynn was Capt. John Winthrop and his wife Prudence who arrived on October 3, 1630 from Ipswich, Suffolk, England. Captain Winthrop had sailed as one of the passengers on the "Mayflower" and landed at Plymouth Rock on November 14th after spending three years sailing around Cape Cod. In 1638 the town platted by Major Samuel Sewall and others was named for Lynn's first governor Rev. Jonathan Contey who had been naturalized in 1637 and then served as colonial treasurer during King Philip's War (1644-46). The town site became part of Salem when that city was created from parts of Ipswich and Lynn in 1797. In 1834 Lynn voters passed a resolution adopting a unicameral legislature with two houses which would be known as the General Court or Council and an Assembly for carrying into effect laws made by either house. From 1835 to 1861 it functioned as an independent town under the jurisdiction of Essex County before becoming part of Boston until 1959 when it became part of Boston again under state government control following passage of legislation abolishing county government withinBoston City Limits The Town Clock Tower (now known as North End Hall) was completed in 1836 to replace an earlier tower erected about 1700 feet north along present-day Route 128 just east of what is now downtown Lynn On December 12th 1865 Sgt Francis Sanger killed three Indians nearpresent-day Quincy Center while serving with Company F 2nd Regiment 4th Infantry US Army during Apache Wars Campaigns leading up to American Civil War One day after Christmas 1865 Lt Col George Armstrong Custer led his Seventh Cavalry through Lynn into history when he encountered Sioux Indian scouts over some hills northwest of downtown using their own guns while traveling downhill grazing their horses
