Lynn, Massachusetts is a town in Worcester County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 14,827 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous municipality in Worcester County. Lynn is located on the Susquehanna River and has two bridges over it: the Susquehanna Bridge ( which opened in 1937) and the Lynn-Worcester Bridge ( which opened in 1954). The town was first settled by English colonists in 1636 as part of Ipswich. The name "Lynn" comes from Chief Wherrington's words "Lonely Inn for Weavers". In 1793, a post office called Lynn was established and remained in operation until 1877. In 1838, the town of Lynn merged with neighboring towns to form what is now Worcester County. In 1955, biologist Drs. David Starr Jordan and Edwin Ostrom founded Cornell University's Laboratory of Ornithology there after winning a competition to design a new research center for ornithologists in Worcester County. Of particular note are its giant cormorants – Phalacrocorax aristotelis – which can grow up to twenty feet long and weigh up to two hundred pounds; as well as its seagull populations totaling more than one thousand individuals per square mile offshore near Easton Point Naval Station. The town of Lynn was chartered on February 14, 1837, by the Massachusetts General Court. The town was named for Captain John Lynn who fought in the Battle of Bunker Hill. The first town meeting was held on April 15, 1837. The first post office was established in 1839. In 1865, Lynn became part of the new Massachusetts Bay Colony and remained so until its dissolution in 1692. In 1898, Lynn became a city and retains that status to this day. The population of Lynn peaked at 2700 in 1920 and has declined steadily since then; according to the 2010 census, its population is 1,826.
