Small batch coffee history in Lowell, Massachusetts began in the late 1800s when a group of farmers started brewing their own coffee. The first small batch coffee was brewed on a farm by Fenton and Brown in 1902. In 1917, the Boston Coffee Company founded its first small batch roastery in Lowell. The Boston Coffee Company was one of the earliest commercial outfits to import and roast its own beans. By 1938, the Boston Coffee Company had become one of America's leading small batch coffee producers. In the early 1970s, two local entrepreneurs founded Peet's Coffee & Tea Corporation as a subsidiary of Dutch-owned Carrefour SA. At Peet's, smallbatch espresso was introduced as a specialty product and sales increased significantly throughout the succeeding years. By 1990, Peet's had achieved iconic status within the coffee community for its unique Small Batch Beans line of coffees that were hand-selected and packaged using traditional methods techniques only used at Peet's facilities. Lowell, Massachusetts was founded on December 3, 1824 by the Reverend John Lowell and his wife Abigail. The town was named after a small fishing village in England that had been abandoned due to the Panic of 1819. The town's original population was only 50 people. In 1830, it grew to 100 people and in 1835 it reached 300 people. It remained at this size until 1840 when it began to grow rapidly due to new land grants from Increase Mather. By 1850, the town had an estimated 1,500 residents and its population had grown to 4,000 by 1860. During its growth as a commercial center, Lowell became known for its cloth industry which produced high-quality fabrics such as cotton pajamas and overalls for the American market. In 1876, Lowell became the first city in Massachusetts to be electrified with incorporation of a Municipal Electric Light Company. The company served the town until 1941 when it merged with Boston’s Municipal Light Company making Lowell one of three cities within Boston responsible for all municipal light services - another distinction that would last into the 21st century. After centuries of growth and commerce, during World War II Lowell experienced a period of decline as many businesses closed their doors or relocated out of state because of wartime shortages of materials such as oil and rubber. However, in 1946 Lowell welcomed home World War II Veteran “Buddy” Barnes who spearheaded efforts to bring manufacturing back to the town through post-war reconstruction projects including establishment of two large textile mills – Richardson Mills (later part of Unilever) and Cotton Hill Mills Incorporated (later part of Hanes). These projects helped revive Rochester’s economy following years of neglect during World War II while also creating jobs for local residents who were then able to support their families again. Although these projects did not directly lead to revitalization or sustained economic success for Lowell thereafter – they did help contribute towards some features which have become synonymous with downtown Rochester today such as its live/work district characterized by mixed-use buildings along streetscapes that encourage pedestrians and cyclists alike; lively nightlife pursuits available in close proximity thereto; rich cultural heritage associated with areas located nearby like Holyoke Museum District; etc.– much has changed since those early days when Buddy Barnes led what is now known as Downtown Rochester through major redevelopment efforts over fifty years ago!
