Lowell, Massachusetts is a town located in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, within the Boston metropolitan area. The population was 7,869 at the 2010 census. Lowell is one of the oldest towns in New England and has been called "the intellectual capital of America." In 1836, when Augustus Saint-Gaudens created his famous Orchard Hill landscape painting in Lowell, he did so as part of a larger tour that took him throughout what is now Massachusetts and Maine. Lowell's rich history goes back to Pemaquid Lake which was first settled by fishermen from Nova Scotia in 1636. The town was founded on December 26, 1797 by Rev. George Peabody and other colonists who sailed from Plymouth Colony on the Mayflower. After spending time trading with Native Americans and exploring their land, they founded a small community named after themselves – Lowell – on an accountable stretch of water near present-day Quincy. In 1837, Reverend Peabody donated land to build a church and school which would serve as an important center for learning for the surrounding villages. The new settlement grew rapidly with people coming to live here from all over New England due to its fertile soil and cheap prices for goods sold around Boston Harbor. In 1838–39, there were more than fifty families living in Lowell; by 1840 it had reached 350 residents. By 1850–51 (the year before his death), Reverend Peabody's legacy had led to such success that prices for goods sold in Boston had quadrupled! When he died suddenly at age seventy-six years old in 1851 without having accomplished much else besides building churches and schools in Lowell, many felt his legacy was incomplete because he never left behind any lasting legislation or initiatives promoting education reform within the townspeople themselves! Many factors contributed to this success including low housing costs relative toBoston during these early years; excellent educational opportunities available through private academies; good transportation options via boat or rail; and local support networks that helped keep businesses open while key services like sewers were built or repaired! With each successive generation of immigrants who came to settle here – both Protestant Germans (1810s) & Catholics (1830s) – conditions quickly improved again giving Lowell one of America’s most vibrant religious & cultural communities… By 1870 nearly every household involved ran its own business providing essential services like groceries shopping & home repairs etc., setting Lexington aside as America’s leading commercial center! railroad competition began making this community less affordable but also introducing newcomers (& native English speakers) into intensely socialized areas where they often formed their own gangs & competed against one another for job opportunities/access to resources….The end result: although some aspects have changed drastically—namely high crime rates [partly due à lack of quality leadership]) today’s citizens are proud descendants of those who made our city great
