In 1951 it became one of the first towns in New England to have its own water system with its own wells and pipelines. In 1984 it annexed the villages of Westfield, Easton and East Bridgewater along with most of Nahant Township (now Amherst) for an area totaling over 50 square miles (120 km2). This annexation increased its population to almost 100,000 people by 2000. Leominster is located on Route 128 about 20 minutes east of Boston via Interstate 90/I-495 highway
