Leominster is a town in Massachusetts, located on the border of Leominster and Westborough. The population was 11,869 at the 2010 census. It has a history dating back to when it was part of Ipswich. The town was organized in 1778 and became an incorporated city in 1892. Leominster is named after Leominster, England, where John Winthrop resided for many years before arriving in New England as one of the signers of the Pilgrims' Compact in 1620. As early as 1624, two small villages were identified in what is now Leominster; these were L’Espinasse (now Westborough) and L’Anse aux Meadows. In 1778, when Ipswich was renamed to Worcester by royal proclamation, it became necessary to re-distribute land within the new township because some parcels had been given away too freely to certain colonists who had lived there for no real reason other than their proximity to Ipswich Landing or their connections with local leaders. Accordingly, commissioners appointed by General Court decided that L’Espinasse should be merged into L’Anse aux Meadows while L’Espinasse Road—which runs south from present-day downtown Leominster—should form part of present-day northbound I-495 heading eastward from Worcester. The first settler arrived at Eastham Pond on October 12, 1776 by way of boat from Milton boat landing after walking overland from Plymouth Colony downriver until they reached Eastham Pond just before dark on October 13 following an unusual warm day which did not rain all week long. Lieutenant Colonel Nathaniel Butler sent out a party consisting of Captains Timothy Pickering and Moses Brown with four horses under Captain John Winslow command to explore this location and see if any fish could be caught; however they did not return until October 20 having found nothing worthy enough to take home with them but some small brook trout which they cooked over an open fire before eating them dinner). On September 9, 1777 Major Jonathan Putnam left Boston for Woburn with his contingent including about sixty men under orders “to plantroads through Woods next door [to] Nantucket so as not leave our kith & kin without proper road leading thereto[.] We thought we would go thro[ugh] those woods so near Nantucket[.] But findinge we could not goo thro[ugh], wee went along Rte 129 westerly towards Portsmouth.[.] There being no such road then made us acquainted with Nantucket bay alsoe." A wharf was built at Eastham Pond during this time frame by captain Putnam's order - convenient for shipping goods upriver between Woburn and Portsmouth - though it never received any commercial traffic because there was no river access available upstream beyond Woburn or Portsmouth Point beyond which ships needed to navigate around cape Cod Sound before docking at Yarmouth or North Dennis docks respectively (the only practical route across Cape Cod Sound then). In 1781 Captain James Smith led a group including ten men along Rte 129W "to check upon possibility thereof" that a river existed connecting Portsmouth Cove on the mainland oppositecod shoal (then known as Massacre Rocks) with tidal waters offshore but found none – thus concluding that he'd discovered nothing more significant than an abandoned Indian village rather than a possible inland water route connecting Portsmouth Cove with tidal waters offcod shoal). However this speculation soon proved correct whenCaptain Joseph Dudley sailed past Massacre Rocks on November 15 HMS Dolphin cruising downcousinngostock harbor accompanied by both privateer vessels HMS Essex(of Rear Admiral Robert Calder's squadron), HMAS Neptune(of Commodore Augustus Woollaston's squadron)and HMS Cerberus.(of Rear Admiral Joshua Booth's squadron) revealing via signal flag Hoist All Ears at Tidal Wave Rock about two miles wide inside entrancechannel representable shoreward broadening out several miles continuing northeastward unto Sandy Hook Light bearing northwesterly . This showed that there really WAS A River Connecting Preston Cove With Tidelands Offcod Shoal! After further investigations it was determined that slaughter rocks refers ONLY TO THE INDIAN VILLAGE THAT WAS FOUNDED BY CAPT JAMES SMITH AND NOT TO THE ROCKS nearby anymore - thanks largely to LtCol Nathaniel Butler who correctly guessed where Dudley's shipwas headed based upon his signals!). This event marked one of the earliest proof positive instances where Englishmen had actually discovered another countryside apart from their own mainland colonies – something which would later become quite commonplace throughout colonial America due largely to exploration/pioneering efforts initiated by British officers acting on behalf of their American counterparts….. In 1892 incorporation happened and Leominster became one of America's largest cities becoming second only to New York City according to its population count taken in 1910…..Leominster also experienced significant growth during World War II due largely due its status as military headquarters for much of northeastern Massachusetts….To date there have been no major changes whatsoever regarding its municipal government since 1920……
