Gould's farmstead was two miles north of present-day Amherst. By 1712, all but one of the family's thirteen farms had been sold to William Bradford for £2 per acre. The Bradford family founded Amherst College in 1713 on land that they donated to the college by their son Andrew Bradford. In 1836, John Fenton bought much of the original college land from Andrew Bradford’s estate and established enlarging it into an 8-acre (3 ha) park named after him as well as other buildings on Broadway Street between King and Wellesley Streets which would house both college buildings and local government services such as firemen and policemen. Leominster is known as "The Hub" because of its location as the regional center for many businesses and industries in eastern Massachusetts. The first permanent settler in what would become Leominster was John Winthrop in 1630. Winthrop had been sent to England by his father and wanted to see if he could find a new home where he could improve his prospects. He arrived in Leominster on July 18, 1630 and began building a house on what is now Main Street. The first settlers were very pleased with their new home and quickly became engaged in local commerce and political life. In 1635, they elected their first town meeting which decided to name the town after Thomas Leach, an English gentleman who had come overland from Boston with letters of recommendation from King Charles I of England. In 1765, when Leominster became part of Worcester County, it also became the county seat for that county. The courthouse was designed by architect David Dudley House and opened on October 5th, 1765; it has since been moved several times but still stands today (it can be found at 269 Pleasant Street). During World War II, much activity took place here at Cummings Air Force Base including production of munitions by General Electric's Camden plant; this plant closed down after the war but left behind a significant industrial legacy that continues to be appreciated today: Cummings Advanced Technology Center provides research opportunities for students at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI).
