After training at home for a few weeks, Company L went overseas on November 11th 1915 and fought its first battle against German forces at Amiens Cathedral on November 18th 1915. After two months of combat they relieved a divisional garrison at Bailleul and then fought their way back across open country until they reached their battalion headquarters near Arras on December 9th 1915 where they remained until relieved by Canadian troops on January 24th 1916. As part of Canada's contribution to the war effort, Company L took part in three major battles--Passchendaele Ridge (November 1917), Ypres (January 1918), and Vimy Ridge (April 1917). The name of the town is derived from the English word "lemon" which means "a fragrant fruit." The 1911 census counted 24,901 people living in Leominster and 6,062 people living in Southborough. In 1928 the towns of Northborough and Southborough were merged into Leominster. At that time there were 27,611 residents in total. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , of which is land and (1%) is water. The riverine soil underlying much of Leominster makes it vulnerable to flooding during heavy rains or snowmelt; this has led to some advances in water management technology for its residents. The town's borders are defined by Route 128 as well as by Bridgeport Brook on one side and Beverly Road on the other side; these boundaries are largely due to land ownership by two families: The Olde Englande family (from London) and John Hancock Sr.'s son John Hancock Jr., who had large holdings in both towns after moving from Waltham Abbey, England in 1692. Hancock's son John Hancock III took over control of his father's properties when he died in 1777.
