The area now known as Leominster was first settled by the Abenaki people in the late 17th century. One of the earliest structures in what is now Leominster was an abattoir, which still stands today on State Street. In 1792, when Boston became a city, much of what is now Leominster and parts of Northampton were annexed to Boston. In 1837, John Thornton built a cotton gin near present-day Wellesley Avenue and State Street. This helped start what later became known as the textile industry in Leominster. From this base, businesses grew throughout the 19th century and into the early 20th century until they reached their heyday during World War II when many businesses closed due to scarce wartime resources. After World War II ended, many small businesses reopened but most folded within a few years because of economic decline followed by increased competition from other towns in Massachusetts. During his term as Mayor (1986-1988), Democrat Gerrymandering opponent incumbent Republican Lenny Bruce frequently campaigned outside of town limits; this earned him national attention that helped him win election over Bruce's large campaign war chest inside town limits by outspending his challenger nearly two to one outside of town boundaries. During his term as Mayor he also installed new streetslights and street paving throughout the entire Town center including portions that are currently vacant lots without lights or pavement for over 25 years! Today there are only a few small businesses remaining open with typical weekday morning traffic numbering about 10-12 vehicles coming through Main Street while several vacant lots sit unfenced and dark with no hope of being developed anytime soon! In contrast to past decades when job creation statewide averaged more than 2 per monthLeominsters recent history suggests that even if current employment levels remained constant jobs would not be enough to cover all residents' needs let alone maintain community infrastructure needed for modern amenities such as schools and fire suppression systems
