Lawrence, MA was founded in 1795 by Increase Mather and John Adams. The town grew rapidly during the Revolutionary War and became an important center for trade and commerce. In 1843, Lawrence was named one of the towns in Massachusetts designated as a seat of government for the new territories acquired by the US in the Mexican-American War. In 1898, Lawrence was absorbed into Boston proper and has since been a highly influential city with a rich history. The first settler in what is now Lawrence were two brothers, Jonathan (Jr.) and christopher Gasson, who arrived on April 20th, 1636 from England. On May 3rd of that year they married Sara Leverett at Plymouth Meetinghouse. By 1641 they had two children: Sarah (baptized November 8th) and Samuel Gasson (March 25th). It’s not clear if these siblings ever resided in their original home; it is more likely that they took up residence near Boston due to religious persecution back then. In 1795, when Increase Mather moved to America from England with his family after winning an estate lottery, he decided to settle down in what would become Lawrence. He quickly became known as one of the most successful merchants in New England because of his sales techniques called “the art of advertising” which he developed while working for his father-in-law Simon Bradstreet. Mather soon started trading goods with other parts of America and formed relationships with Governors Thomas Hutchinson (Mayhew), James Kieft (Hartford), George Washington (Fenway Park) – among others – which led him to become one of the most influential men in early Massachusetts politics. It wasn't until 1803 that Mather actually built his own house on Main Street; this marked an important milestone for him given how long it would take him to establish himself as a prominent merchant within town limits. Mather's business acumen also earned him many friends within Parliamentarians such as John Quincy Adams who served as Minister To Great Britain between 1801-1805; however, Adams did not always respect Mather's independence while living close by due to their shared ancestry/ancestry background together - something that eventually caused friction between them both professionally & politically over time . In 1807 Mather donated land adjacent to present day Market Square which forms the foundation stone for what would later become Harvard University; this event signaled an important change for Lawrences fortunes as Harvard gradually emerged as one of America's leading educational institutions . Despite these setbacks however, Mathanugh saw promise yet future growth potential withinLawrence even during these difficult times thanks largely to support from affluent resident Arthur Yarmouth who saw opportunity where others might have seen only trouble . With continued investment & hard work from its founders lawsrence steadily regained much lost ground culminating with its incorporation intoBoston proper onJanuary 26th 1900 making it finally official that "the great old port town" had truly undergone a rebirth!
