In 1851, when Boston defaulted on its loans and went into bankruptcy, Lawrence became one of the first towns in Massachusetts to go through receivership. Withdrawal from interstate commerce caused by the Civil War led to a decline for law and justice but it didn't mean that Lawrence's entrepreneurs were gone for good; they just shifted their focus to other businesses such as manufacturing.
