Lawrence, Massachusetts is a town in western Massachusetts. It was founded in 1784 by John Lawrence and is named after him. The population of Lawrence was 25,814 at the 2010 census. The town has a total area of 21 square miles (58 km2). The town is located in the towns of Granby and Northampton, and lies on the eastern edge of the Berkshires Mountains. The town's geography makes it an agricultural center with dairy, poultry, and hog farming being its main industries. The nearby towns of Northampton and Granby are also major commercial centers for the surrounding villages. As part of colonial Plymouth Colony, Lawrence was one of only two townships within Boston County. In 1692, however, Boston County was divided into four districts—the district around Lawrence being among them—and Lawrence became an incorporated village under the jurisdiction of Northampton. From 1826 to 1887 it functioned as a separate city; following incorporation it adopted a mayor-council form of government with a single mayor who held office for five years renewable by vote instead of term limits which had been previously mandatory in Boston City government. The first settler in what is now Lawrence was John Lawrence who arrived from England in 1784 with his wife Rebecca and their two children Linda and Timo. They began Cultivation on land that would become known as "Mountain View". Today there are still many residents who live close to where they were born or raised including: Mountain View Elementary School (pictured), Mrs Charles Everson's house from when she bought her farm adjacent to Mountain View during World War II; Gertrude Butler's home on Middle Road between these same streets which until recently housed her son's high school; Averill Pritchard's house across from First Congregational Church on Elm Street near Mountain View Cemetery; Edwin Flanders' home on Maple Street just east of Centre Road prior to his death in 1916; Lowell Demarest’s home across from Lowell High School off State Route 15E before he moved away to start his own business several miles away along Interstate 95W near Canadian Tire store when this route was realigned pushed him out into Sharon Valley because this road paralleled I-95W right outside his back door! ; finally there is my current address: 10 Willowood Drive #001N west side lot behind Walmart
