On July 10, 1692, in what is now Holyoke, Massachusetts, a group of Puritans founded the Congregational Church. The congregation voted to move from Hartford, Connecticut to Holyoke because they believed that the area had more potential for agriculture than Hartford did. The first church was built on the current site of Holyoke High School. In 1881, Holyoke became a city and its first mayor was John A. King. In 1966, Holyoke joined the United States as a state and its first governor was Abraham Lincoln. In 1978,Holyoke's college competed in the NCAA division III Hockey Championship which it won by beating Merrimack College 3-1 in overtime. Although now considered an academic institution with world-renowned programs like law and engineering degrees (the latter being granted to such alumni as Henry Kissinger and Richard Nixon),Holyoke's history goes back much further than this. For instance, one of its earliest residents is Reverend Samuel Eliot Morison who helped found Swenectowne Meeting House in 1775 and served as president from 1778 to 1782
In 1630, the English settlers in the town of Holyoke built a small chapel on the current site of Holyoke University. The first sermon preached at this chapel was by John Winthrop. In 1765, Holyoke became part of Massachusetts and was renamed Worcester.
