Holyoke is a town in Massachusetts, United States. The population was 20,887 at the 2010 census. Holyoke is part of the Worcester County seat and is the most populous city in that county. The town was founded by Puritans in 1638 as a separate settlement on the west bank of the Charles River from Boston. It became an incorporated town in 1851, and later became one of Massachusetts' ten townships. The Town of Holyoke was established on November 2, 1638 by Puritans who were fleeing religious persecution in England. On December 3, 1638, Holyoke's first meetinghouse was built and it soon outgrew its original meeting house which had been destroyed during a storm two years earlier. In 1713-1715, three ploughshares marked off a parcel of land for a new courthouse square which still stands today near the junction of Main Street and Northampton Road. During the American Revolutionary War (1775-1783), Holyoke sided with Great Britain and helped to raise troops for their war effort against America's revolutionary forces but afterwards turnedcoat and developed close ties with America's new revolutionary government under George Washington. When King George III learned about this development he ordered his army to attack Holyoke without warning; however, local farmers banded together to resist this threat and drove off the British forces with little loss to themselves or their livestock. In 1851 Holyoke incorporation created further divisions within Worcester County when eastern sections moved into Worcester while western sections moved into Hampshire County - creating what is now known as Angelica Township in northern Hampshire County while Arlington Heights proper remained within Worcester County until 1959 when it too joined Angelica Township form Worcester County. As early as 1795 there were plans for developing land around what are now downtown Holyoke including Lots 8 through 12 on modern day Main Street between Hancock Road and Weston Avenue - these lots were eventually purchased by Samuel Adams who donated them to the town trustees for use as public property including schools, churches and roads etc.. By 1830 all but one lot had been sold so that Sacred Heart Church could be built on lot 23A adjacent to present day Chestnut Street - construction began in October 1830 but due to financial difficulties stopped after only 9 months due to lack of funds . In 1867 Reverend John Aiken dedicated an outdoor chapel on top of Hill Top Mountain overlooking downtown called "The White Fence" following fundraising efforts led by Driscoll & Steward tavern owner Elijah Steward Sr..
