This experience inspired him to order an end to British military activity throughout New England and he ordered Major-General Nathanael Greene to take control of this area. As a result of these events, over 1/5th of Massachusetts was under Patriot control at the time of his death in 1800[3]. Despite being under Patriot control at different points throughout its history, Haverhill never joined the United States during its formative years due to economic reasons:[4].
