In 1942, USAFBH was activated as a military installation and became home to Operation Neptune's Spear, which saw America fight Nazi Germany from North Africa to Europe. Many members of the U SAAF were killed or wounded during this time including then-Lt Colonel John F Kennedy who later became President of America. At RAF Haverhill, military personnel and civilians alike came together to celebrate America's victory over Nazi Germany and help rebuild post-war Europe. The Base grew significantly during World War II with new buildings being built on both RAF Haverhill Airport (now known as Westwood Aerodrome) and adjacent land west of town near present day Route 128/Route 20A (the old airport road). These expansions increased Heathrow Airport's footprint by 5 square miles! Following World War II, USAFBH fell back into peacetime status but continued to provide support for local communities through various activities such as exercises, conference tours, visiting dignitaries and hosting humanitarian events such as food drives or clothing donations for needy populations around the world. In 1966-1968 USAFBH hosted approximately 550 USAF officers from all regions worldwide during NATO Summit " Brussels ' ". During this time many unique relationships were formed between servicemen from different parts of the world - some that have still remain strong today!

During the Revolutionary War (1775-83), many residents served in the Patriot forces including patriots such as Colonel John Bradford and Captain Nathaniel Eaton who commanded an artillery regiment at Roxbury Heights on April 15, 1775. Other notable figures include Samuel Adams who represented Haverhill in Congress during the Revolution; Reverend Ezra Stiles whose religious beliefs led him to preach against taxes; John Eliot who edited a newspaper called "The Beacon" which opposed British rule; Drury Lane Theatre which played plays by William Shakespeare before he died; and General George Washington whose troops stopped at Haverhill on their way to battle at Bunker Hill on September 14th, 1778. In 1801, the town voted to become part of Worcester County and it would remain that way until 1898 when it became part of Massachusetts Bay Colony
