Gloucester, Massachusetts is a town in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 24,587 at the 2010 census. The name is from the village of Glocester in Essex County and may be derived from Old English Gledeshicce meaning " clustered together ". The town was chartered on April 15, 1692 when it was included within the new Province of Massachusetts Bay. It received its current name on November 3, 1768 when it became part of the Province of Worcester. Gloucester's rich history begins with its settlers who first arrived in 1692 and soon after founded a small community called Glocester. This settlement grew over time and by 1768 had become an incorporated town with a population of around 30 people.
