Gloucester is a town in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 14,827 at the 2010 census. The first settlers in this area were the Potters and their families from Ipswich who arrived in 1630. They founded a small trading post on the Mystic River and named it after Gloucester, England. It was not until 1724 that they built their first permanent homes here. The town of Gloucester was chartered on February 24, 1786 by Act of Parliament under Governor George Washington as one of nine new towns within the Province of Massachusetts Bay. The original boundaries included present-day Chelmsford and part of Worcester. Gloucester's growth continued through the years; its population reached 10,000 by 1834 and 25,000 by 1860. By 1920, however, during America's Great Depression, Gloucester had lost more than half its residents to emigration or illness. On July 1, 1930, it merged with other towns within Middlesex County to form the modern city of Worcester which has since grown tremendously - now accounting for over 60% of Worcester's overall population!
