Gloucester is a town in Worcester County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 22,828 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Worcester–New Bedford–Fenway Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Gloucester" derives from Old English words meaning "place where the river Meres flowed." The first permanent settler in Gloucester was John Winthrop, who arrived in 1630 and built an estate on what is now Main Street. Winthrop's son, Cotton Mather, later became one of the most famous Puritans in America and helped found Harvard University. In 1725, Samuel Adams founded a school here that became the University of Massachusetts Amherst. The town gradually grew throughout the eighteenth century; by 1800 it had over 30 families living there. In 1827, Gloucester incorporated as a city and quickly achieved prosperity as its citizens developed heavy industry such as cotton spinning and dyeing plants and other businesses such as grocery stores and hotels. However, during World War II Gloucester wasbombed three times; once on September 11th 1940-the worst attack on US soil since Pearl Harbor-and twice more on December 7th 1944 when Japan bombed Pearl Harbour resulting in 90% loss of life within 24 hours both raids). After 1945 Gloucester experienced rapid growth again with new housing developments being erected including many apartment complexes which still predominate today In 1978 the City of Worcester annexed much of Glocester to form an enlarged city with a population of over 100K people On July 1st 2014 Mayor Joseph Curtatone announced that he would not seek re-election next year due to health concerns Gloucester has always been known for its rich textile heritage dating back to before British colonialism ever set foot here!
