Gloucester, Massachusetts is a town in Worcester County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 15,651 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Worcester–Fenway Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was first settled in 1635 by Puritans from England who were looking for a new home after Cromwell's English Restoration. The name "Gloucester" comes from Old English "Gleowere" meaning "a place where trees grow." In 1639, the town voted to incorporate as a separate village and it held its first meeting that year. In 1701, when Gloucester became an incorporated township, it had a total population of just under 1,000 people. Over time the population grew rapidly due to its location on the border between Worcester County and Norfolk County and its close proximity to Boston. By 1800, Gloucester had reached 5,000 residents and by 1825 it had grown to 10,000 residents. During World War II (1939-1945), Gloucester played an important role in the war effort with its factories manufacturing munitions such as planes and tanks. However many of these factories closed during the war due to competition from other industries such as plastics and automobile production which increased during wartime times demand for materials made abroad. Despite this rapid development – especially during portions thereof – downtown Worcester experienced some limited economic decline starting in World War I until renewal occurred following World War II spearheaded by federal funding earmarked for redevelopment projects within downtown Worcester itself instead thereof focusing on nearby Springfield (then part Ofglouchester).
