Gloucester, Massachusetts is a town in Worcester County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 33,651 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern edge of Worcester County and is bordered by the towns of Northampton to the north and Southbridge to the south. The town had a total area of 23.2 square miles (60 km²). The first permanent settler in Gloucester was Nicholas Colman who built a log cabin in 1748 on what is now State Street. In 1764, John Winthrop established what is now Winslow Academy in present-day Gloucester and named it after his father's birthplace of Winchelsea, England. In 1812, Rev. Drury erected the first meeting house in Gloucester which still stands today. In 1814, local businessman Elijah Hill invested $80000 in building an Erie Canal towpath through Worcester County and donated land for a township center on what is now Main Street near where Interstate 95 crosses the Pawtucket River east of downtown Glocester. The new community soon became known as "Hilltown". The first people to live in what is now Gloucester were Algonquian Indians who migrated from Canada around 1000 BC. The Dutch arrived in 1620 and began trading with the Indians. In 1629, English settlers named Jonas Winthrop founded a small settlement on Cape Cod Bay about south of Boston. By 1638, most of Plymouth Colony had been lost during the Great British Civil War; only a small group of Puritans remaining under Governor John Winthrop continued to exist as colonists in what is now Gloucester. In 1775, when Boston was besieged by American forces led by General George Washington and General Thomas Gage, many residents chose to flee to Jersey City before joining up with General Washington's army later that year. Aftermath of the Revolutionary War left much of New England abandoned due to lack of food and resources; however, Gloucester survived thanks to its strategic location on Route 6W between Newark and Dover). During World War II (1939-1945), much activity took place here including production of aluminum cans for Boeing Aircraft Company’s assembly line at Deering Air Force Base in Essex County outside Ofstedville; shipping goods between Long Island Sound and points east via Route 6W; and military production at Deering AFB which included converting two B-17 Flying Fortresses into bombers for use against Japan (the first combat mission being flown from this airbase Operation “Doolittle” over Chichibu Harbor on December 18th 1942).
