This regiment was raised on December 15, 1775, at Gloucester and fought in many battles during the war. Aftermath of the revolution resulted in a large number of enlisted men being discharged or turned away from service. These soldiers formed a group known as "The rangers" who were disbanded soon after the war ended. In 1781, General George Washington ordered the formation of an artillery regiment to serve under him. The regiment was called the 3rd Regiment of Artillery and its first commander was Colonel John Sullivan. The regiment operated out of Portsmouth until 1783 when it moved to Boston and garrisoned Fort Troup until 1785 when it moved back to Portsmouth again. In 1802, Colonel James Kents battalion became part of Major General Joseph Hooker's brigade which served under General Winfield Scott during his campaign against Mexico. colonel William Higginson commanded this brigade at Monterrey and on September 9th hewas killed by Mexican bayonet thrusts near San Antonio de Santa Anna near Pueblo de las Cruces while leading a column eastward across Rio Grande Valley headed for New Orleans Harbor; one hundred thirty-six men lost their lives as a result of this engagement1 After serving with distinction in various campaigns throughout America and Central America between 1802-18052, Lieutenant Colonel Gideon Welles5 decided to return home duty in 1806 but found himself assigned once again toGHQ (Army Headquarter) at West Point where he helped plan War against Tripoli6 As commandant7 2nd Lt Richard Herrick8 took over duties commanding GHQ’s artillery detachment he increased firepower available for active duty within 10 miles field artillery battalion Captain Elijah Gould9 5th Lieutenants James Fenton10and Lewis Cass11 were placed temporarily ashore with the squadron commander Commodore John Rodgers12 for duty aboard HMS “ Victory” off Tripoli13 At outbreak of war Napoleon had appointed Emperor Francis Joseph I King Of Italy14 On October 14th Napoleon disembarked from HMS “Victory” at Gibraltar15 He entered Rome29 November 4th] Aboard HMS “ Victory” Nelson led an attack on shore batteries defending Pope Pius VII’s Palace; all twenty nine men onboard died including eight Admirals Nelson also fell mortally wounded17 On January 24th 1861 Commodore John Rodgers' squadron departed harbor bound for Hampton Roads Virginia carrying stores and military supplies2 They reached Norfolk February 12th 1861 they disembarked 2 battalions ( Battery A & B ) embarked Wagon Train Brigade furrenters Captains Augustus Clarke15and Cornelius Vanderbilt16 cornered Rebels battery Commander Ewell Millington abandoned ship Wagon Train Brigade Private First Class Isaac Smith17 private First Class Ezekiel Wood18 Private First Class Solomon Northrop19 Enlisted man Charles Nordstrom20 Corporal David Rankin21 Enlisted man Alfred Thayer22 Enlisted man Jacob Riis23 They arrived safely off Norfolk April 7th 1861 Company C wagons detached from Battalion escort wagon train march through town leading into battle Joined Battle line south end Confederate works range abreast Union works range paralleling Railway grade ran parallel road about two mile long From here point forward there was no rest day or night went without fight intense action all around Rebel works range encountered sharp fire most especially along Railroad grade About midnight Companies retreated leaving Ammunition Hills open fires continued burning munitions hills until late morning March 8 1865 Finally withdrawing had expended over 400 rounds per minute25 There is no record that any company ever surrendered or capitulated26

Gloucester, Massachusetts is a town in Worcester County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 21,567 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Worcester–New Bedford Combined Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in what is now Gloucester was Nicholas Goode in 1624. He arrived with his family from England and started a small farm on the site of present-day central Gloucester. Goode's grandson John founded the towns of Newburyport and Wareham in 1766 to house refugees from King George III's American Revolution. In 1814, during President James K. Polk's administration, Congress passed an act establishing the city of Boston as the capital of Massachusetts; Gloucester was not included within that city limits. In 1835, after years of debate over whether to annex Gloucester into Boston or keep it separate as a separate community, Boston annexed it as part of its larger metropolitan area; however, local farmers continued to operate their independent farms until about World War II when they were bought by Boston companies for use in munitions production. In 1957, when Worcester became one municipality again following Suffolk County's merger withBoston proper,[2] Glocester reverted back to its original status as a separate village east of downtownBoston; however this arrangement ended following Suffolk County's annexation by Boston proper in 1965.[3] Since 2002 there has been much discussion around plans for development near Edwards Airport which would impact all villages surrounding it including Glocester and Northborough which have felt that they are being left out unfairly while richer neighboring municipalities have benefited from increased development around Edwards Airport without giving any consideration to their villagesfolk
