He was the first captain of the Coast Guard Station in Gardner and is considered to be the founder of the station. From 1919 until his death in 1945, Captain James M. McHugh served as captain of the station. In 1946, Lieutenant Commander Noel B. Kelleher took over as captain of the station and would serve until his retirement in 1978. From 1978 until 1993, Commodore David A. Grimes served as commander of the station. Commodore Grimes was succeeded by Lt Commander Christopher J McNally who would serve for two years before becoming commanding officer again on January 1st 1997 which he would stay for three more years until his retirement on December 15th 2001. In 2006, Rear Admiral Michael J Walsh became commanding officer of the Coast Guard Station Gardner after being appointed acting commander on October 1st 2005 when Commodore Grimes resigned due to personal reasons."
Gardner, Massachusetts is a town in Hampden County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 1,848 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Boston metropolitan area. Gardner is one of two villages in Hampden County and one of five towns in the county. The first European settlement in what is now Gardner was made on October 15, 1636 by Puritan settlers from Winthrop Bay Colony who named their new land "Gardner". In 1639, Morton purchased land from the natives for £2us and began to cultivate it. He also built a house there which still stands today. In 1764, Gardner Village was formed when the vote of its residents passed to incorporate as a village under English law with boundaries defined byTOKIEWOOD RIVER on one side and GARDNER AVENUE on the other side through territory previously owned by Morton's son-in-law Robert Treaton. In 1812 Gardner was renamed Medford after General John Forbes who had been killed while campaigning in Canada that year. On May 14th, 1837 an act to create Hampden County passed House of Representatives and became effective when it was signed by Governor John Quincy Adams into law; Gardner along with Northampton were among those towns included within Hampden County’s borders for just over a century until they were removed from the list due to population growth or annexation into larger municipalities such as Boston or Worcester (Hampden Counties merged with Worcester County on January 1st 1898). From 1840 until 1860 Gardner lay within range of New Bedford so strong tidal currents carried water supplies directly from that coastal city’s harbor upriver to Gillespieville Landing whence conveyance wagons took passengers across Main Street bridge over Ipswich River before returning downriver to New Bedford where they unloaded onto wharves near present day Middle Road in downtown New Bedford

The town has experienced several waves of population growth over the years: during World War II (when it peaked at over 100 people), during the 1960s and 1970s when there were large numbers of students attending Northeastern University, and more recently as result of various agricultural expansions and economic booms throughout New England. The most recent surge began around 2000 with increases in office tower construction along Route 128 corridor; although this has slowed since then due to rising real estate values throughout much of Greater Boston
