Gardner is a town in Franklin County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 9,554 at the 2010 census. Gardner is located on the Connecticut River, east of Springfield and west of Boston. It borders the towns of Northampton to the north, Pittsfield to the east, Westborough to the south and Revere to the west. The town was first settled in 1635 by Capt. John Winthrop as part of what would become Plymouth Colony. Gardner's first church was built in 1712 on a site now occupied by Mercy Hospital. In 1796 Gardner became part of Worcester County when that county was created from Franklin and Middlesex Counties. The original courthouse still stands today within walking distance of both its original location and its current incarnation as a library building known as "The Bishop". In 1838 Gardner voted overwhelmingly in favor of becoming an independent city and it did so on December 21st that year (the date also marks present-day Boston's centennial). On January 1st 1841 Gardner became one of only two cities in Massachusetts (along with Quincy) which were not merged intoBoston during annexation proceedings following the American Civil War; this distinction has since been lost among other large US cities such as New York City or Chicago apostleilization efforts over time.
