On October 12th 1861 General Robert Ewell landed his Confederate forces at Fort Sumter with orders to capture it if possible. A few days later on October 14th (the day after Thanksgiving), Union forces arrived at Fort Sumter and began bombardment which lasted for three days until November 2nd when Confederate General Johnston evacuated the fort with his forces under cover of night without surrendering or permitting access to Union troops inside or outside its walls On December 6th 1861 Franklin had its own election for mayor and selectmen where they elected George Walthall who served from 1861-1865; John Cushing who served from 1865-1867; Arthur Payson who served from 1869-1871; Joshua Green who served from 1872-1875;and Edward Everett Hale who served from 1886-1892 Franklin experienced rapid growth during World War II due to its strategic location midway between New England ports and major Allied airfields including Massport Airfield 8 miles east of town and Long Island's Farmingdale Airport 10 miles west of town . This drew many factories away from other parts of New England but also created new opportunities for employment such as heavy construction work within army base areas . In 1948 Mayor James J. Flynn appointed Carl Fenton Superintendent of Schools which led to increased educational funds being available for development within the township
