Franklin was born in the Massachusetts Bay Colony on December 12, 1743, to Benjamin Franklin and his wife Lucy. At the age of twelve, he helped his father set up a printing press in their home and soon became one of the most accomplished printers in the colony. In 1763, after leading a military expedition against George Washington's forces at Saratoga Springs, Franklin was elected president of the United States. He served two terms before being impeached and removed from office by a majority vote of the House of Representatives. Upon his release from prison, Franklin returned to Boston and began work on establishing what would become known as The Philosopher's Stone. In 1776, he founded The New England Journal as an independent publication intended to promote Enlightenment ideals throughout New England. In 1826, Franklin married Eliza Haywood Smith and moved to Philadelphia with her. For many years he served as mayor of that city before retiring in 1881 at the age of eighty-four. After his death, he was buried in West Liberty Cemetery near Philadelphia. Franklin is today considered one of America's most significant historical figures and is commemorated annually on Decoration Day by various organizations throughout the United States

It was here that he tasted for the first time fresh roasted coffee and became convinced that it could be successfully grown in North America. In 1837, J.B.Ferguson set up his own small roasting business in Boston, Massachusetts. Ferguson's roastings were highly praised by both professional and amateur drinkers alike and helped create what is now known as "quality" coffee. Over the years, many other notable roasters followed suit, including Harry Smith & Sons (1934-2003), Peet's (1963-2002), Bauhaus Coffee Company (1975-present), Blue Bottle Coffee Company (1999-present), Stumptown Coffee Roasters (2006-) and Four Barrel Coffee Co.(1974-) - all of which continue to produce top quality coffee products today

The city name is derived from the first English settlers, the Pilgrims, who landed on the shore of what is now Portsmouth, New Hampshire in 1620. In 1848, when Boston was incorporated as a city, Franklin became its mayor. He was also a delegate to the United States Congress and served twice as president of Pennsylvania (1793-97 and 1800-1809). In 1847 he published an influential book called A Summary View of the Rights of British America. This pamphlet criticized American policies that had led to European colonization of North America. After his death in 1849, Boston renamed itself Franklinburg after him.
