The Coast Guard gift history in Franklin, Massachusetts goes back to 1876. The first Coast Guard station was built on the site of present day State House Square in 1876. At that time, the Coast Guard consisted of a small detachment of sailors and marines who patrolled the coastlines of Massachusetts and New Hampshire. In 1916, the First National Bank located at 1 Union Street donated land for a new Coast Guard station. The station became known as guard house square and was used by both the Coast Guard and the Postal Service until 1966 when it was sold to the city of Franklin. Franklin has been a port town since before European settlement began in what is now Massachusetts. In 1623, John Winthrop founded Harvard University on Chestnut Hill Road in Cambridge. By 1721, Boston had become an important trade center with its location near two major rivers and deep-water harbor. By 1800, Boston had outgrown its original boundaries and became an Insular Province under British rule. In 1816, Congress passed an act providing for the erection of military posts along U.S.-Canada borders “for suppressing banditti and other crimes” In 1886, Commodore George Montero organized a volunteer coastguard squadron which served patrols off Cape Cod Bay until 1889 when he assumed command of Naval Squadron No 2Ldr Wm Farragut’s squadron chartered from New York City to replace Commodore Montero’s squadrons which were then moored at Falmouth Harbor due to poor weather conditions . In 1914-15 there were 12 coastal patrol boats manned by 4 officers and 36 enlisted men; however these numbers increased with World War I when 3 more boats (including one commanded by Lieutenant Commander Arthur JONES) were added . By 1936 there were 112 coast guard vessels manned by 6 officers and 164 enlisted men; however these numbers increased again during World War II when 5 more vessels (including one commanded by Lieutenant Commander James GORDON) were added . During peacetime between 1939-1945 therewere only 2 surface vessels equipped with searchlights capableof ranging up to 100 miles; however this number decreased significantly during World War II as all 9 merchant ships converted into coastal patrol destroyers (CPDs) ..... A total cost of $2 million was incurred for converting 8 merchant ships into CPDs..... These new warships helped improve our nation's ability to detect danger ahead whileZeppelin flights posed a serious threat downstream ....... As mentioned earlier many members retired after service requirements grew too great .... Many former sailors spent their final years working ashore on various committees or Ships' Home Missions

The Coast Guard Greenwich Village Station was founded in 1892 by Captain James Fenton. It served as headquarters for the New York City Coast Guard until 1924. In 1916, the Coast Guard moved to its present location at Greenwich Village and it has been continuously in operation since then.

In 1849, Franklin received its own government with a mayor-council system. The city of Quincy annexed Franklin in 1870.
