Franklin, Massachusetts is a town in Franklin County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 7,878 at the 2010 census. It lies on the Connecticut River and is part of the Boston metropolitan area. The town's name comes from Mount Lebanon in Lebanon County and its founders were led by Reverend John Newton who set up a mission there in 1768. In 1836, the town became part of Worcester when that city was split between Franklin and Worcester Counties. By 1926, when Franklin merged with neighboring Arlington to form a new city-county government, it had an estimated population of 27,500 people. The first coffee shop opened in this small town in 1822 by Joseph Needham. Coffee beans were brought overland from Brazil by Isaac Allston and sold at the local grocery store in order to help financeNeedham's business venture. needham operated three stores before his death in 1826; one on Copley Road (now Route 9), one at Lancaster Avenue (now Route 12), and one on Tremont Street (now State Highway 191). In 1830s two men named Amos Bennett and Solomon Sherman started manufacturing their own coffee beans using water processes developed by David Livingston Snell for his company Livingston & Snell Co.. These early roasters roasted whole bean beans rather than ground them which allowed them to have more control over their flavor profile as well as their grind size which gave them a more consistent product across different retailers throughout New England.. The Norwich Coffee Company began operations about 1835 out of a small room near First Congregational Church on Ipswich Street where Reverend Ebenezer Eliot officiated as Coffeemaster until 1840 when he moved to Norwalk where he continued his services until his death in 1865... One important early figure associated with Franklin was Elijah Parish who arrived hereabouts in 1835 under an assumed name - Elijah Howe - while attending Yale College... Howe organized various social events including cricket matches against Harvard University teams during winter breaks... He also helped found the Presbyterian church hereabouts and served as its minister for many years... Howe left behind him several legacy items including the Elijah Parish House now used as offices of the Historical Society of Franklin… A number of other prominent luminaries who lived or visited hereabouts include: Hennepin County’sJudge James Buchanan Woodruff; Salmon Pee Dee’s governor Elias Boudinot; Jonathan Edwards’sonitus John Quincy Adams; General George Washington; Drury Lane’s Mme de Lafayette etc., among others… .
