In 1836, Fitchburg had a population of 11,471 and was incorporated as a city on November 15th of that year. The economy of Fitchburg has beendominated by agriculture for most of its history. Today, the primary industry is manufacturing: shipbuilding and plastics are some of the largest employers thereabouts. There are also several small businesses which have sprung up over the years including two wineries and one distillery; however all these have since closed down or moved away from Fitchburg due to changing economic conditions within the local market place Finchburgh Hall - now known as 'The Blackberry House' - once served as both an academy for young women (now it is used as a museum) and also home to America's first ladies' school (later called Mount Holyoke Female Seminary). It opened in 1826 when Mrs John Quincy Adams attended Phillips Academy with her daughter Abigail Adams . The house now houses many exhibits about early American life such as costumes from Revolutionary War days

Fitchburg, Massachusetts is a town in Hampshire County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 5,521 at the 2010 census. It lies along the Connecticut River between Northampton and Milford. Fitchburg is one of the oldest towns in New England. Its first settlers were Quakers who came from Philadelphia in 1636. In 1785, General John Sullivan moved his army from Fitchburg to block British forces from invading New Hampshire. Fitchburg was officially chartered as a town on November 12, 1812 by an act of the Legislature of Massachusetts under Governor Elbridge Gerry. At that time it consisted of just over a hundred people living on three small farms: Unity Plantation (now part of Milford), Jameson's Farm (now part of Northampton), and Copley's Farm (now part of Fitchburg). The land for which Fitchburg was founded had been granted to Adam Whitney by royal charter dated October 3, 1712; but no village or township could be erected until some proprietors should come forward with such a plan as they should think proper for its organization and improvement." The town grew slowly at first because there were few purchasers for its lands since they were not well cultivated and only suitable for pasture or hunting purposes. However, with the opening up of new areas in eastern Connecticut by American Revolutionary War veterans returning home after their campaigns there(including Benjamin Franklin)and others coming through Boston looking for land to settle during the years leading up to statehood in 1820-24 more people began to move into Fitchburg including farmers and mechanics who had lost their homes during the war or become refugees from other parts of New England hit hard by war devastation. In 1827–28 William Davenport organized a group of investors who purchased about 640 acres northwest of present-day Fitchburg for $4 per acre from Samuel Robbins which included most all present day parks within today’s boundaries including Unity Park/Greene Farms Preserve/Finch Pond Preserve etc., east bank below present day Main Street Bridge across river & south side behind Dairy Queen building (& lots now belonging to various schools). This parcel became known as 'Davenport's Purchase'. He also acquired right-of-way through Friends Meeting House on Meeting Street northward extension he called 'Davenport's Road' extending thence southeast to join main street near post office where travelers took leave before continuing down mainstreet
Fitchburg is a town in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 7,824 at the 2010 census. Fitchburg is part of the Boston–New York- metropolitan area. It began as a small settlement on the east side of the Charles River and grew rapidly during the 18th century as an agricultural center for silkworm farming and other textile manufacturing activities. In 1855, Fitchburg became one of the towns in Worcester County when Worcester merged with Middlesex County. By 1870, Fitchburg had become a large commercial and industrial center with factories producing munitions, textiles, shoes, beer, cheese and timber. The town experienced rapid economic decline during both World War I and World War II but has revived since the late 20th century as a bedroom community for workers in nearby Boston.
