The Coast Guard Auxiliary in Fitchburg, Massachusetts was founded on December 6, 1927. At that time, the local Port of Boston had a need for a corps of volunteers to help keep the harbor open and prevent collisions between vessels and shore traffic. The Coast Guard Auxiliary was formed as a result of this need and has served the community ever since. In 1951, the Auxiliary began providing service to Cape Cod. In 1970, they began services in Rhode Island. In 1992, they were given their own command in Fitchburg. The present day Coast Guard Auxiliary is one of America's oldest corps of volunteer firefighters and land defenders. They provide support to over 100 stations across Massachusetts including those located in Amesbury, Brockton, Easthampton, Fitchburg, Fall River, Groveland Heights and Lynnhaven. Their mission is To protect life on our Nation's shores by providing emergency response services when needed most; education through training programs; outreach through presentations to youth groups; disaster preparedness with emphasis on coastal flooding events such as hurricanes Katrina and Sandy; andcommunity engagement through participation in fundraising initiatives

Fitchburg, Massachusetts is a town in Hampshire County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 9,567 at the 2010 census. It is the second-largest community in Hampshire County after Manchester. Fitchburg had a post office from 1793 to 1853. Fitchburg was first settled by English colonists in 1630 and was named for Jeremiah Fitch of London. The first school in what is now Fitchburg opened in 1793. In 1800 John Goode founded an iron works here and it became known as "Goode's Iron Works". In 1813 the village of Northampton merged with Fitchburg to form one municipality. The city of Boston annexed the town of Fitchburg on October 15, 1898. On April 10, 1904, the city granted incorporation to the Town of Fitchburg (later renamed North Adams). On February 21, 1909, the towns of North Adams and South Adams amalgamated into one municipality with a combined population of 487 people: also becoming one entity with jurisdiction over all three townships which made up their borders until then. On November 6th 1978 a tornado struck central FITCHBURG; destroying most homes and businesses including manyJunior high schools as well as churches and other important civic structures that had stood since before the Revolutionary War when these communities were part of Charlestown! In spite of this severe damage Hurricane Floyd came ashore barely missing us but did cause extensive damage to some parts our town including several trees falling from large limbs across streets such as Main Street across from our Grain Elevator injuring 7 people! Two families lost their home outright however other houses sustained significant damage or total loss- 3 bedrooms plus 2 bathrooms were destroyed along with 4 cars! Many windows were smashed open leaving very little insulation behind even though only 20% relative humidity remained!!! All electrical appliances went out Plus most gas pumps stopped working due to broken lines Some Absolutely incredible treehopping during this storm Our firefighters worked tirelessly night & day without rest just trying not let any structure fall down!!! A few weeks later we received word that 2 more homes had been destroyed byFollow Up Storm Damage so we knew there really wasn't anything left standing once again??? We are truly blessed to still have power even though it has been quite some time since last an event like that took place

On December 15, 1941, Japan attacked Pearl Harbor and soon after America found itself embroiled in World War II. The Coast Guard played an important role in combatting enemy submarines and planes during World War II and continue this service today with missions such as search and rescue, maritime security and humanitarian relief. Today, the Coast Guard is a vital part of American society and provides critical support to our military Allies.
