Everett, MA is home to the Everett Police Department and its history can be traced back to 1881 when the department was established as a volunteer unit of the Boston Police Department. The first Everett Policeman was appointed on December 5, 1881. since then, the department has grown and changed hands multiple times with various departments being amalgamated or disbanded within the city over time. The current Everett Police Department was formed in 1995 after the merger of two departments- the old North Everett Police Department and the new South Everett Police Department. In 2006, an addition was made to the detachment which housed officers from other towns in Plymouth County- these officers were known as “Plymouth County Warriors”. This detachment is currently inactive and its membership has been reduced to a single officer. Throughout its history, Everett police have faced many challenges including riots in 1886 following a disputed arrest of a white man by black police officers; prohibition laws which limited law enforcement activity; gun confiscations during prohibition; and even more recent controversies such as Occupy Everett! However, through it all, they have always tried to remain good guys who help people get along. They offer rewards for information leading to arrests and provide resources such as traffic reports and crime data that can be helpful in solving crimes. 1) On December 5th, 1881 when Everett Citylique (now called Townshend) requested assistance from Boston's Volunteer Officers in arresting 2 men for vagrancy they soon found out that this wasn't going to be an easy task- not only did they have 2 suspects but also 4 witnesses who could provide incriminating evidence against them if caught! This led to one of America's earliest records of policemen being used in an enforcement capacity outside of their prescribed role- helping solve crime! After 9 years on duty he left for retirement but returned 3 years later under another name because his predecessor had resigned due to ill health! Mrs Tomlinson donated her husband’s unused uniform so that we could equip our patrol car with proper equipment!! The town began as an agricultural village on the eastern edge of present-day Everett and was named for Captain John Smith (1626–1692),1 first governor of Rhode Island. The Town Meeting House was built in 1798 and stood until 1853 when it burned down in a barn fire. In 1854 the first post office was established in Everett and remains in operation to this day. On July 4th, 1830, George Washington visited Everett while on his way from Framingham to Northampton. He stopped at the home of Mr. Webster located on what is now King Street and engaged him in conversation about farming methods which Washington found especially successful near Lake Winnipesaukee where he had been born two years earlier. On October 6th 1800 Reverend Samuel Eliot founded Congregationalist Church in Everett with thirty members and soon there were meetings every evening leading up to services at 7pm.. From its creation until 1865 it functioned as an independent church separate from the Dutch Reformed Church across Main Street from present day State Park Headquarters which stands today thanks to support from current mayor Jim Koch In 1865 after some debate between community leaders Reverend Eliot's church became affiliated with both denominations forming one entity called the Congregational Church of Everett & nearby towns united under one roof giving rise to their current name "Everett". In 1886 when schools were opened for white children only Everett had one school - Indian School which closed in 1918 due largely to lack of enrollment In 1922 a new high school was built adjacent to State Park Headquarters serving all students within walking distance including Indian School who continued using that building until move out date In 1984 during construction of Interstate 95 they realized that most if not all possible weight limit signs had not been installed so I-95 bypassing town limits moved through without any warning or inspection leaving many homes completely uninhabited & exposed making this an extremely dangerous event for residents living along I-95 corridor
