Everett is the principal city of Everett-Worcester Metropolitan Statistical Area. It lies on the border of Worcester and Worcester County. The town was first settled by English colonists in 1638. The present-day town was founded in 1786 by Benjamin Lincoln after he purchased part of what is now Waltham from the Indian tribe Nianticough. In 1812, Everett became one of the towns that formed Worcester County when it was created from Parts of Middlesex and Plymouth Counties. According to the United States Census Bureau, Everett has a total area of 21 square miles (60 km²), all land. As of the census of 2000, there were 16,747 people, 7,715 households, and 4,927 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,569/square mile (573/km²). There were 809 housing units at an average density of 594/sq mi (230/km²). Everett, Massachusetts is a town in Plymouth County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 9,859 at the 2010 census. Everett is part of the Boston metropolitan area. The village of Everett was founded by selectmen of Plymouth in 1636 as a small plantation on the south bank of the Merrimack River near present-day Arlington Heights. The first settler was John Parker and his wife Rebecca (née Weston). By 1641, the village had grown to include over 100 people and two churches. In 1702, Peterborough Township was formed from parts of Plymouth and Arlington Heights. In 1828, Everett became an incorporated town when it gained land east of Route 3 along what is now Route 128. This gave it a larger population than any other town in Plymouth County save for Amherst. At its incorporation, Everett had three stores and one bank; today only one store remains open in Everett while both banks have closed their doors decades ago. The town's name comes from early English settlers who named it "Everett" after General John Eliot who led an army against Massachusettes during King Philip's War (1675-76). The first permanent settler in Everett may have been Captain Richard Greenough who arrived around 1640 but there are no records to support this claim beyond local legend or oral history.
