Navy Deployed Gift History in Everett, Massachusetts began with the USS Constitution, which sailed from New York City on May 8, 1875. The ship carried gifts to various towns and cities throughout the country. These gifts were often given as a way of showing support for the military and/or to show appreciation for service. Gifts ranged from small items such as books or pens to more large items like cannons or rifles. The USS Constitution was decommissioned in 1922 and its gift history ceased then. However, the naval deserters who founded NavalAir Museum (now Portsmouth Navy Yard) took on the legacy of the USS Constitution by creating a museum dedicated to displaying navy deployed gift history from around the world. In 1984, they moved their collection from Portsmouth Navy Yard to Everett, Massachusetts where it still exists today. The USS Constitution is responsible for many of Everett’s most notable navy deployed gift moments including: In 1911, while stationed at Hampton Roads Naval Base, Virginia, she brought back Admiral Dewey’s flagship “Albatross” after her victorious campaign against Spanish Cuba. This event became known as “The Reciprocity Raid” because similar ships also visited Norfolk Naval Station; in return for sailor exchange rates being raised from local stores ashore. In 1916-17 she transported troops and supplies during World War I through Halifax Harbor before returning home via Newport News Shipbuilding & Dry Dock Company berth #2 dockyard that year She was later used as a training ship until converted into an airship transport squadron carrier (CV-12) in 1934-35 under command of Commander Fitch Bayless USN.. After flying numerous experiments over North America he again set down landings at Halifax harbor but this time his plane crash landing near present day Seal Beach due bad weather conditions.. After three failed attempts he finally succeeded Jan 2nd 1935 when his plane touched down safely just north of Newport News shoreline after making two successful passes over Elizabethtown.. During WWII she served primarily as an airship transport squadron flagshipcarrying Commander Ernest Jorgensen USAAF on Long Island Sound runways before her loss Apr 21 1945 with all hands off board when hit by Japanese suicide bomber piloted by Shigeru Hashimoto .. She continued flying ferry flights between Westerly Airfield NAS Blackheath UK and London Luton Airport until removed from service Dec 1951.. She was eventually scrapped at Gardena CA with all her parts remaining there until donated to NHMSS thru donation by Mr John A Ransom MD Feb 7th 1985 . Everett, Massachusetts is a town in Plymouth County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 6,859 at the 2010 census. Everett is part of the Boston metropolitan area. The first permanent European settlement in what is now Everett took place on December 8, 1630 when two boats filled with pilgrims founded the town of Mayflower on Martha's Vineyard. The Town of Everett was incorporated on February 26th, 1825 and named after Captain John Eliot who captained one of the vessels that made the founding voyage to America. The first store opened in 1827 and by 1830 there were six stores in Everett. By 1840 there were ten stores and three hotels. In 1850 there were twenty-one stores and eleven hotels; by 1860 there were thirty-eight stores and thirteen hotels. In 1870 only twelve businesses still existed but by 1880 there were forty-six businesses including fifteen banks In 1916 Everett had its first post office which mail service continued until 1925 when it was replaced with the current post office building which still stands today
