Everett is a town in western Massachusetts, United States. The population was 12,906 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Worcester–Springfield metropolitan area. Everett was named after Captain John Everett and his men who explored the region in 1692-93. The first settler in Everett was Nicholas Bicknell who built a cabin on the banks of the Merrimac River in 1786. He also raised chickens and pigs and sold their eggs to local farmers. In 1812, Isaac Sibley arrived in Everett with his family from Connecticut. Sibley founded a fur trading business and constructed a mill on what is now Main Street. He also purchased land for himself and erected several homes including one known as "Sibley's Hill". In 1814, Ebenezer Morse came to Everett from Norwich, England with his wife Pollyanna Morse and children Prudence (born 1796), Mary (1797), John Wesley (1801), Martha Ann (1803) and Abigail (1805). They erected a small wooden church on Meeting House Square which they called "Pollyanna's Chapel" after Pollyanna Morse's mother. In 1825, Jabez Bond became the first white person to purchase land in what is now Everett when he bought two acres of land east of present day Main Street from Isaiah Bates for $10 per acre plus lumber costs. He soon began building cabins for summer use on adjoining tracts until he had developed more than 20 adobe buildings along Route 9 across frompresent day State Highway 128 near where Interstate 95 exits today (). After Real Estate Manager Nathan Purdy persuaded bondholders to sell him additional parcels totaling 100 acres northeast of present day State Highway 128., bondholders voted unanimously to name their new community "Everett" on October 3rd, 1828 following an afternoon meeting at Snelling’s Tavern located just south of I-95 exit 68A(). On November 6th, 1830 voters elected James Cushing as Mayor followed by Thomas Freeman as Town Clerk.. By 1840 there were over 350 people living in Everett including 160 farmers (), 190 mechanics (),180 domestic servants (), 20 blacksmiths ()and 10 shoemakers (). There was no school until 1850 when directors decided that “a high school should be established within our limits” (). A gristmill was started by Ebenezer Morse in 1851 but it failed catastrophically due to flooding during wintertime so he rebuilt it Watson & Sons Mills which continue production to this day . In 1860 mail service between Boston and Worcester was discontinued so residents had to rely on stagecoaches which sometimes got caught up in snowdrifts or bogged down during travel times.;-) The first post office opened at milepost 154 on December 1st 1860." In 1917 Elisha Bean became President pro temporeof the Massachusetts Senate because Samuel Eliot Morison resigned;-) At this time Everett had over 500 residents including 200 farmers (), 150 mechanics ())150 domestic servants ())20 blacksmiths ())and 10 shoemakers (). One store closed permanently around 1920 while another store moved uptown into what is today Elmwood Place before closing again around 1990;-) Community Development Corporation acquired many properties adjacent to I-95 through eminent domain circa 1990-1991 making housing development possible such as Hummelstown Village northeast of I-95;-) Today there are over 50 houses built since 1990 alone based off various community plans submitted thru resident input
