The townspeople were granted a charter in 1737 which permitted them to hold elections and make laws. In 1814, the town was incorporated as a village. In 1870, Easthampton became an unincorporated community within the town of North Adams. in 1917, Easthampton withdrew from the township of North Adams and became an independent municipality under the name of Easthampton. The population of Easthampton peaked at 12,000 in 1930, but declined to 7,500 by 1990 due to increased Hispanic immigration and gentrification. Since 2000, however, there has been an increasing trend of new immigrants settling in Easthaston; this has led to a resurgence of local businesses and tourism industry.

The original store on Main Street still stands today as "The Friendly Gasset" and has been used for various purposes throughout its history including as a restaurant and bar since 1978 when it reopened under new ownership In 1865, one of the largest textile mills ever built began operations in Easthmaintown called "Happenstown". The mill closed down in 1984 but some artifacts from that time are still on display at the former mill site
