Easthampton, MA is home to the United States Army's Third Infantry Division. The division dates back to 1775, when General George Washington led a force of Patriot volunteers into battle against British forces in what is now Easthampton. The town was founded on October 16, 1775 by Colonel John Adams and his associates as an outpost on the Western Branch of the Massasoit River. The First World War saw the enlistment of many local men and boys from Easthampton. In 1917, Easthampton became the site of the world's first major tank battle when American tanks faced off against Russian T-34s in what is now known as "the Tank Battle at Easthampton." The town alsosupported America during her Second World War engagement with Nazi Germany. On December 8, 1944, Japanese soldiers stormed into Easthampton to stage a surprise attack on U.S. forces stationed there; however, they were repelled with heavy losses from American artillery and machine gun fire. Today, Easthampton remains a center for military activity with its own post office and army barracks dating back to 1827. The name "Easthampton" comes from Old English Hæsða-tun, meaning "forest clearing." In 1795 a land grant to John Adams was made for what is now the western edge of Easthampton Township. This became part of Hadley after that township was created from parts of Amherst and Newton on February 6, 1847. The first school in Easthampton opened in 1828 and was called Westfield School until1869 when it became Eastfield School. In 1865 a new school building was built at 100 Main Street which served as the town's high school until 1978 when it became known as Evergreen High School. In 2007-08 all five schools in Easthampton were merged into one building and are now known as Churchill Middle School
