The American Revolution began in 1776 with the Declaration of Independence. In 1855, the Massachusetts General Court authorized the purchase of 1,000 rifles and pistols by the military for Easthampton's defense against raids by Native Americans. The weapons were not originally meant to be used offensively, but as a deterrent to Indian attacks on settlements in New England. The rifles and pistols arrived in Easthampton in 1856 and were used initially for self-defense, but also became popular among local militia groups. In 1901, when the state of Massachusetts prohibited handguns, many of these firearms were converted into artillery pieces and placed within the army's Ordnance Department at West Point. Today, each rifle and pistol has been passed down through several generations of Easthampton residents who have kept them preserved andgebraically locked away. The Easthampton Herald-Leader published an article on December 6, 1854, about the Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry Regiment's deployment to Louisiana. The regiment had arrived in Boston on November 10 and was brigaded with the 3rd Battalion of the Worcester County Militia. 1st Lieutenant George W. Eldridge commandeered a wagon from Captain John Smeaton's company of infantry and took it to Baton Rouge where he reassembled the unit for their march northward. The 1st Battalion marched to Ville Platte on October 26 before marching east to Alexandria on November 3rd. After resting at Alexandria for two days, they continued their journey northeastward through Fayetteville until reaching Thibodeaux on November 8th. They then continued northwestward through Beauregard Parish until reaching New Orleans on November 14th. The regiment arrived back in Boston December 2nd having served out its four month enlistment term
Easthampton is a town in Norfolk County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 10,582 at the 2010 census. Easthampton is part of the Boston metropolitan area and is included in the Boston-Worcester-Manchester Combined Statistical Area. The first Europeans to set foot on what is now Easthampton were members of the French and Indian War party led by Captain John Smith in 1722. They named the site "Hastings" after Lord Hastings's home near London. In 1724, an act of Parliament authorized growth within boundaries laid down in 1693 as part of a grant from King Philip II to Colonel John Winthrop for his new colony of New England. By February 1, 1725, land had been acquired on which the town stands including most of its present downtown area. The small settlement quickly grew into a thriving community with homes, businesses and churches built over time. In 1736, Easthampton became one of nine towns included within Suffolk County when that county was created from parts of Middlesex and Worcester counties. During World War I, Easthampton helped support American forces with munitions production activities at its nearby munitions factory called Fort Myer which produced shells for use by America's allies such as Great Britain and France during the war effort. Afterward, Easthampton continued to grow as an agricultural center with poultry farming becoming a major industry; however, it also experienced rapid growth in terms of housing development during this period as well due to increased demand for commuting areas around Greater Boston following World War II (American entry into World War II caused an increase in traffic congestion). Today's economy thrives thanks to numerous high-tech companies headquartered in Greater Boston including Nortel Networks Incorporated (NOK), Qualcomm Atheros Wireless INC., Dell Technologies Incorporated (DELL), General Electric Company (GE) and Symantec Corporation (SYM). Employment opportunities are available throughout town through local government jobs such as police officer/firefighter/EMT; public health workers; teachers; etc.; while several institutions offering graduate degrees - such as Northeastern University - have large student populations located surrounding their campuses hereabouts. Many new developments have recently arisen Downtown including The Park Place complex containing upscale shops & restaurants facing Pelham Parkway & West Street while also accommodating larger office complexes being constructed on opposite sides of Main Street adjacent to both hospitals - Brigham & Women’s Hospital & Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center - making it easy for commuters who wish to reach many neighborhoods simultaneously without having long commutes or journeys!
