In 1834, an act created the Cambridge Branch Railroad which connected Worcester with Boston; this helped spur development withineasthampton and also led to increased trade betweenthe two towns. The railroad continued operation until 1940 when it was replaced by the Amtrak rail line that now runs through EasthampTON
Easthampton is a town in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, located in the north-central part of the state. The population was 20,824 at the 2010 census. Easthampton is bordered by Amherst to the east, Northampton to the north, and Lexington to the west. The first permanent settlements in what would become Easthampton were made on an uninhabited island in present-day Charlestown Harbor about 1636 by men from Weymouth who had left HMS "Dunsgaard" after a three-year voyage from Greenland. These early settlers were probably led by Captain John Smith and his brother David. In 1721, Easthampton was chartered as a town under English rule with boundaries that included most of modern day Amherst and Lexington counties as well as parts of Worcester and Norfolk counties. It became one of Massachusetts' five towns on February 14, 1776 when it voted to secede from colonial Massachusetts. The town's growth was slow due to its small size and lack of any major industries until around 1800 when it started to experience some increased prosperity thanks to land speculation and agriculture. In 1816, Easthampton annexed part of neighboring Northampton so that its population could reach 10,000 residents; this annexation created new economic opportunities for both communities which continue today. It experienced another period of growth during World War II with many factories being built in nearby Amherst and Lexington due to wartime need for materials such as steel and munitions.
